I generally find that
the store site for company products tend to be higher than hitting some of the big online discount spaces (amazon, overstock, wal mart etc). This really is nuts, because certainly it must mean more money for a store to sell direct rather than add in a middle net man.
After careful searching and comparing (and I am one to cross reference carefully), I found that Elis best bet for his Lego Star War toys was direct from Lego.
First of all, many of the more popular or newer toys are either not available or are sold out with other vendors. There were a number of the toys Eli wanted at Amazon, but they were out of stock for example.
In terms of price, I could not beat the Lego home store for in stock as far as the base price. In fact, I checked with the local Toys R Us which is the only store around where I can bank on finding these specialty items, and they ran much higher than the Lego online store. Eli saved $30 on his last purchase by going online and passing on the impulse buy at the local store.
The pricing is not low for the shipping. The price for sending out one Lego box kit was $4.95. Since I accidently put two of the same kits in the cart, I can tell you that the shipping price for two kits was $8.95. The one kit price seemed about right, but almost doubling for two packed in the same box was as little extreme.
That problem with putting two items in rather than the one intended is related to the set up the site. They do not easily show the cart and contents like many sites. That is something that they need to work on. I hit buy, but I could not see any indication that I had made the selection. Then, I went to check out and discovered the mistake. I had to start all over on the form information after updating the cart to take out the second set. That really is not acceptable. They could fix it so that its clearer what youve decided to buy, and they could hold the information rather than clearing when you update the cart.
I can say that Lego did a very nice job packing. The box was really large and packed with lots of brown paper. I would, actually, suggest buying boxes closer to the product size. That might save Lego on the shipping end. In any case, the product is well protected and arrives in prime condition.
The turnaround with Lego is very fast. They must have packed and mailed the day I ordered. The package was at the back door by UPS in 4 days. This is a rural area, and I never expect orders to arrive so speedily.
The complex Lego projects really appeal to my 12 year old. He loves to build things, and he is currently hooked on the Star War line projects. They run about $50 per project, but he spends many happy hours building his spaceships.
I have found that the Lego site works out best for our purchases of these kits. They have the best selection and the best prices (in stock). Shipping runs a little high when adding more items to the order. The web site needs a little work. But, overall, they are doing a great job at Lego.com.
