I have been a L.L. Bean customer for 25+ years. They have some nice products and good customer service.
I have been disappointed, however, that their selection in certain areas has dwindled. They used to offer a lot more ladies casual dresses and skirts, and now might offer two dresses and less than a dozen skirts. I like to order their towels for gifts and have them monogrammed and shipped. This is a good way to send a gift. I also think that they offer less on their sale pages than they used to. I would like to have more sale items to choose from. |

My story is simple I have purchased things on and off from LL Bean for over 15 years and have seen a gradual decline in performance. Usually, it involves their running out of stock in certain items. Just today, six days before Christmas, I received a package I ordered on-line two weeks ago. The order had been for a sweater (as a gift); I received a pair of pants. I called to correct the situation and was told they were out of the item I ordered, and there were no plans to order more. Basically, not only were they late with delivery, they delivered the wrong item, left me no time to correct the situation, and no longer carried what I wanted. Thats Customer Service!

Raincoat not waterproof, poor response when I tried contacting them

I sent two emails about a two year old raincoat which was no longer waterproof and got no response. I then tried their instant chat and was basically told that they had no record of my order. Then they said that it was from washing the coat too many times. When I told them I had never washed it they said that I should wash it and put into the dryer to make it more waterproof! Huh? Then they said they could sell me a spray for $14.50 to use on the coat and finally, grudgingly, said I could return it if I wanted. I was not impressed.

Some of you might think this is crazy, but I bought my soon to be Kindergarten-er an L.L. Bean backpack. Sure, it was $25, but to me, Id rather get one of high quality and have it last, rather than buy a cheap-o and have to replace it every year.

I live in Japan. I ordered 2 Win Breakers and a Rain Jacket from L.L.Bean. I ordered these by Fed Ex but without notifying me L.L. Bean shipped them by INTL AIR. I was planning to use one of these for a trip I am going on next week. I called L.L. Bean and they just said there is nothing we can do. No explanation on why they changed the shipping method either. Also they said if you don't want it just refuse it, which is what I guess I will have to do. Now, I windbreaker-less for my vacation. What happened to L.L. Beans service level? What a waist of my time.

If an item is on back order you are informed so you can decide if you want to wait. I have always received exactly what I have ordered. I had a really bad experience at LL Bean and sent a letter to Customer Service. No response to this day, three weeks later. I sent an email to Customer Service requesting that I be taken off the mailing list. No response. I sent another email requesting confirmation that I'd been taken off the list. Finally a response - a representative contacted me, confirmed I'd been removed from the list, asked for details of my complaint and promised to investigate with the manager. That was ten days ago and no response. Perhaps LL Bean used to care about customer service, but those days are long gone.

I am a very loyal, long time customer of L.L. Bean. In fact I have an L.L. Bean credit card which gets me points towards future purchases and free shipping on all orders! YAY! Not only does L.L. Bean have a great selection of clothes and shoes, they also carry outdoor goods for hiking, camping, fly fishing and an assortment of other needs. Rarely does an L.L. Bean product fail, or disappoint me enough that I feel justified in returning it. But, in the few situations I have had to return something, they have always stood behind their 100% lifetime guarantee. In fact, if it is an obvious situation of product failure, they will even send you a postage paid return bag you can drop off at any post office. Their customer service department is not combative, accusatory or patronizing in any way. This type of customer service from an online merchant is a rare, and greatly appreciated commodity these days. Thanks L.L. Bean!

I love this place. Online is not as good as visiting their 24 hour store but they are quality and have never had a problem with a return. They may seem expensive but their goods last forever. i wouldnt buy a sweater anywhere else.

I know L L Bean is a large company but I couldn't believe in today's electronic world that it took 24 hours to get an email confirmation for my order. Their return policy if very liberal but it took over 2 weeks to get my refund. I think they should spend some money in staffing.

Ordered a coat Dec. 1 -- it is now Dec. 20, getting colder, and I still don't have my coat or any satisfactory explanation of why it has taken so long. If I had known it was going to take this long, I would have ordered elsewhere or gotten an expedited shipping auction. I will NEVER order from LL Bean again.

I ordered a bunch of clothes on their website, and with one exception all the items were supposed to ship within 2 business days. After a week, nothing had been shipped yet, so I sent an annoyed message asking the reasons for the delay. I received a kind apology for the delay, the promise to refund my shipping expenses, and the package was shipped the next day. Good customer service. Accidents can happen, but these people know how to fix things. I will buy from them again. With so many online merchants who mess up and then are never available for their customers, or come up with lame excuses (Buy.com anyone?) LL Bean offers a good example.

My experience with LL Bean was (and still is) a nightmare. I started shopping early, at the beginning of September, for a gift I would need by 9/30. Found a sweater I liked, but it was on a back order. Customer service assured me it would arrive no later than 9/18, so I placed the order. By 9/18, it hadn't arrived. Soon, I received a post card stating the order had been further delayed. The next day I called Bean and told them to cancel the order. They told me the sweater had arrived and was in the "ship" mode. I told them to cancel anyway, which they said they would do. The next day I checked my bank account and discovered they had billed me for the sweater. Since that time, I have been trying to get my money back. It is now 10/10, and I still haven't received a refund. They said the sweater shipped a week ago, but I haven't received that either. I am in Bean hell. Be very careful when you try to cancel an order with this merchant. You'll get screwed.

L.L Bean is one of my favorite stores to order online. They always have the items right there. I bought a fleece lined jacket last year. This is the best jacket I have ever owned. The jacket was warm enough to wear even in mid December. Now my grandmother buy items from them now. The speed of the order was exceptionally fast (I think it was less than a week). Thanks L.L. Bean, I will be your forever customer (Grandma too).

Missing L.L.Bean parcels yet I received Lands' End & Talbots parcels

Last December I ordered L.L.Bean clothes, online, to be airmailed to an address outside the USA. The order came to less than $300. I chose uninsured international air mail delivery (2-3 weeks delivery time + mail charge $45). Insured mail would have gone by International Express (1-2 weeks delivery time + a very expensive mail charge of $85.00). One item was out of stock so I was informed 2 parcels would be sent (the 2nd parcel would contain the out of stock item when it came in stock).
When I placed the L.L.Bean order, I also made an on-line Lands' End order (1 item was out of stock and was to be mailed when new stock arrived) and also an on-line order for Talbots merchandize. Within a few days I received the 2 parcels from Lands' End and 1 parcel from Talbots. After receiving the Lands' End & Talbots orders I still wonder what happened to my 2 L.L.Bean parcels. I'll leave it to you to draw your own conclusion. |
