Let me just say, I feel like a fish out of water in Home Depot. I know very little about home maintenance and/or how to fix things. I’m lucky I can replace the printer cartridge in my computer printer.

I wander around that store like Moses in the desert. I always have to look for someone in an orange apron to help me. Luckily of late, I take my husband and I just push the cart. He knows exactly what we need and where it’s at. (I know this is about Home Depot online, but I’m getting there.)

Before my husband if I had a problem, I’d have one of my friends look at the problem and WRITE DOWN EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED. That way when I got in the store, I’d find an “orange apron”, show them the list and point at it like a deaf mute. If they’d ask me a question, I’d say “whatever’s on the list”. I would then have the orange apron lead me around like a seeing eye dog and pick out exactly what I needed. If they’d ask a question like “well either one of these would work, which do you want?” I’d say “pretend I’m your mother and let’s assume you love your mother, which one would you recommend?” This seemed to work pretty well.

Well now that there’s Home Depot online, I can do a search for what I was told I needed, print out the paper, take the paper to my friend(s) who were going repair whatever for me, have the friend(s) tell me exactly what I wanted, circle it on the paper, then I would take the paper (with the picture and description) to the brick and mortar Home Depot store and without much help, find it myself!

The site is also good for comparison shopping. We found this particularly helpful when we needed a ceiling fan for the kitchen. I comparison shopped online with Home Depot and a few other local stores. I knew I wouldn’t be buying online as the shipping costs would be very prohibitive. Now many fans online were not available in the stores, so we ruled those out right away. Again, I knew we’d be physically picking it up in the store.

We also “shopped” online for hedge trimmers and were able to decide before we went to the store what particular one we were going to purchase.

I found the site very easy to navigate and the selection for the fans just incredible. I was also able to get directions, store hours and store phone right on the website - no having to use mapquest or the phone book.

So do I recommend the website? Yes, it is a tremendous research tool, especially for big ticket items.
