It is a mixed bag.

I have bought many items on Half.com and sold a few. They are not absolutely honest with sellers. Suppose an item sells for $5.25 and the shipping charge to the buyer is $2.79. The buyer pays $8.04. Half.com sends the seller (about three weeks later) $6.40 and tells the seller that the commission is $0.79. They send the seller $1.94 for shipping. They never directly mention the $0.85 withheld from the shipping charge. Do the math for yourself.

Half.com is quite terrible indeed, at least if you are trying to buy something. Now if you want to scam people, look to half.com; it's excellent for scamming. Half.com does have a "buyer protection policy," but if you file a claim, they don't

I placed an order at half.com. I received the order only six days later. My only complaint about half.com is the high shipping charges. My order was $2.90 and I paid $7.50 for shipping! The actual postage paid on the envelope was $2.07. Not fair.

I PURCHASED 2 BOOKS ON SEPTEMBER 3, 2006. THE BOOKS WERE TO BE DELIVERED 9/13 TO 9/25/06. AS OF TODAY, OCTOBER 4, 2006, I HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE BOOKS. THE AMOUNT OF $133.00 WAS TAKEN OUT OF MY CREDIT CARD ON 9/5/2006.
I NEED THE BOOKS AND SENT 6 EMAILS SINCE 9/25/06AND THE BEST THAT CUSTOMER SERVICE CAN TELL ME IS TO FILE A CLAIM AND WITHIN 30 DAYS I WILL GET A RESPONSE. THIS IS NOT A REPUTABLE COMPANY AND I AM NOT SATISFIED AT ALL WITH THEM |

Absolutely hate this site, I ordered three books none of them came. One of them, the seller tried to convince me to take the softcover version instead of the hardcover (this was a $100 textbook). I will NEVER again go to this site or order any thing. When I tried to get my money back half.com told me I have to wait until I get the item until they will refund my money!!

BAD EXPERIENCE
by dkwit7, September 2, 2006
|

I an very unhappy with the textbook ordering and selling procedures on half.com. The seller says that they are sending a book, charges your account, and then several days later THROUGH TRACKING ONLY do you find out that they did not have the book, did not send the book, and already charged your account and did not credit your account. The half.com website is very consumer unfriendly. You must wait 48 hours to even begin to file a claim even though you know the item will not be sent and you have been charged. Then when they finally let you click on "file a claim" they make you wait an additional 7 days to not receive the item even though they (half.com, the vendor) know you will never receive the item and you have already been charged. There are no email links, no phone links on half.com, just entry points for your card to be charged and you to get ripped off. Never again, BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!

Best place on the www to purchase books. You have seller ratings (be sure to check those before ordering from some) but they keep all information updated and posted for buyers safety and interest.
I have literally purchased 100's of books using Half.com. I've received a great many of my books in mint condition for cost of shipping and handling only. |

Cheap books; many nearly new.
by econnell, May 31, 2005

Half.com is a fabulous place to get inexpensive books.
The books I receive live up to their seller's descriptions; often the books are brand new at substantial discounts. I order a number of books for my book club reading and often am able to get the hardcover copies (mostly unread) for more than 50% off of cover price. I've also been able to build up quite a collection of low-cost, but excellent, quotation books for use in my high school classroom. Shipping can take a while with media mail (can be frustrating if you are waiting for a book to read by a given date), but a number of sellers offer expedited shipping if you are willing to pay the price. I find the free gift (read: magazine subscription) offers that pop up after you order a little annoying, but have had great success overall with the service at half.com! |

Great, Easy to Use, Great Prices
by am7kel, March 10, 2005

Great easy to use. Easier than going page to page on regular ebay. I think the prices on Half.com are sometimes more reasonable than in ebay. They offer many items like books, games, and cds.
The shipping charges are less expensive than the same item on ebay, which sometimes can get as high as $55.00 for one video set. My order was accurate and came very quickly. The seller was very helpful when I had questions about the item. My overview of Half.com is that it is a Great site to visit and buy items from. If you are looking for a deal then go there first. |

Half.com advertises a buyer protection policy, but this is a total farce. I believe that most sellers on half.com are honest, but half.com does absolutely nothing to monitor those who commit fraud. I filed a complaint in regard to a book described as "brand new" when it was actually in poor condition. All I got from half.com was a bunch of emails from different people, none of whom appeared to have actually read my complaint. Nothing but a runaround. All I asked for was a refund of the price paid plus my cost to return the book to the seller. Half.com never addressed any of the issues in my complaint, but they did agree to reimburse me for up to $2.00 to mail a large hardback book with delivery confirmation and insurance. What a joke.

I just sold two books through half.com. Great selling experience, and everything went smoothly. However........ I will never do this again. Their practice of only paying twice a month, and then only when it appears to be convenient to them is ridiculous. It has been almost three weeks, and still no $$$$$$. Not only do they take a big commission, but just think of the float they are getting on all of our money. I won't do it again.

When it's bad, it's real bad.
by taxax, February 4, 2005

As noted previously, one deals with individuals and cannot expect uniformity. When a deal is smooth, it's usually very smooth. It's the non-smooth deals that are extremely frustrating. For instance, when a seller fails to deliver the item purchased, the buyer will be frustrated. While it is easy to communicate with sellers using the site's provisions, it is almost impossible to escalate remedial efforts when the seller fails to respond (the "claims" procedure requires the input of absolutely unavailable and unobtainable information, without which the claim cannot be processed). Equally frustrating, is the impossibility of communicating with a human at half.com via email and the problem is compounded by the site's apparent policy of depriving buyers, after a period of time, of the means of leading "feedback" on unsatisfactory sellers.

Great site for students. I bought all of my textbooks here this semester so I could avoid the outrageous prices offered by my school's bookstore which is owned by Barnes and Noble. Maybe if more people knew about this site, schools would have more competitive pricing. The problem is finding out what ISBN number you need and if you need CD ROMS, Workbooks and such. Many postings do not specify and you'll have to go to your college bookstore to find out. From experience, they do not appreciate this, but exercise your right to buy from where you choose.

I've made several purchases through Half.com and they're great,as long as you don't have a problem with the seller. HOWEVER, one video I ordered on Dec 16 never arrived and after 3 unanswered emails to seller (DirectToYou), I filed a complaint with half.com. 98% excellent ... 2% or less problematic
by dplank, February 19, 2004

As a very small video retailer, we supply videos/new releases to convenience stores and small retail outlets. We have been in the business since 1985 and have been buying (and selling) on Half.com for the past 2-3 years. Half.com is a valuable resource when we have had to replace lost or damaged tapes, or even for 'special requests' from customers. Have had several bad experiences with 'lost' videos and non-responsive sellers, but overall if you read the feedback on past transactions, you gradually can learn who to trust. This is especially important on sellers who have history of duplicated/pirate tapes, DVDs & CDs. Reading feedback can weed out those you'd rather not buy from. Most sellers are reputable and will try their best to make you happy with your purchase.
I like the newer feature of reduced shipping costs if you buy more than a single item from the same seller. I don't care for the fact that if a seller gets too many poor feedbacks, he can come back with a new user name and start duping customers again. Don't know how to solve the problem, but the problem does exist. |

Excellent. The half.com system is set up to be as problem-free as can be. Shipping cost is stated up front, along with a variety of condition categories to choose from for the same item, each with a different price. Half.com has all the communication between buyer and seller set up, so it's a very simple way to buy or sell. I do both, although I find it generally better for buying than selling, as their commissions are HIGH!

I had a lot of friends tell me that they loved this site, which is owned by Ebay. But when I tried to check it out, this site seemed to be in disarray. And be careful with the prices. Sometimes if you shop around, you find used items as much as or more expensive than new items that are on sale or even clearance-so buyer beware. Do your homework first.
I really can't complain about the site, but it just didn't seem very user friendly.I just like other sites a little more. For this kind of shopping, I use ebay.com, dawnmark.com, and Yahoo shopping |
