Prices at the Gap seem to always go down. I remember when it was possible 15 years ago to buy jeans for under $20 and t-shirts under $10 and it is still possible today. This makes the Gap a great place to fill in all of those basics everyone needs: jeans and chinos, t-shirts, basic sweaters and sweats for everyone in the family.

The Gap carries clothing for adults, kids and babies. They have stores in almost all of the malls in the U.S. (this comes in handy for returns). Plenty of the clothing that Gap carries is stylish, however they can be relied on for all of your casual, basic clothing as well. More recently, the Gap has added Gap body which sells underwear and p.j.s and Gap Maternity wear. In addition to clothing, the Gap also carries a limited selection of shoes and accessories.

The quality of the clothing varies from good to excellent. I have t-shirts that are over 10 years old from the Gap. I also have jeans that ripped after only six months of wear.

The merchandise on the web site is not always the same as the stores. In particular, the sale items seem to vary quite a bit from the offerings in the stores. However, the web site does have a good variety to choose from and there are several web only styles of jeans.

You can find sizing charts on the web site. I have bought clothes for myself, husband and kids. The measurements on the size charts are very accurate. For children, don't rely on the ages part of the size chart. Look to the actual measurements to help make your selections.

The web site has a very professional look and is very easy to navigate. You can choose the category you are interested in: men's, women's, girls, boys or babies. Gap body and Maternity are also choices. Clothing and accessories from any of these can be aggregated in your shopping cart.

The Gap offers all kinds of deals to customers through various means. If you shop in the store, you may get a 10-20% off coupon for your next purchase. If you sign up on the web site for e-mail notification, you will get occasional coupons for 10-20% off to use in the store or on-line and also free shipping coupons. There are also discounts to Gap credit card holders (see below).

It also makes sense to check some rebate sites to see if the Gap is offering a rebate or coupon for internet shoppers. Two such sites to check out are Upromise and Ebates.

I finally got a gap credit card a few months ago. I got 10% off my first purchase in the store and 10% off my first purchase on-line. I expected to get additional deals as a credit card holder, but sadly, none have come my way.

Ordering is easy and you get an e-mail acknowledging your order. An e-mail also notifies you when the order ships. The clothing always arrives within a few days - usually faster than other mail order merchants.

Returns are very easy. If you want to do them by mail, a return label is included in the packaging. If you want to save on shipping costs, you can make the return at any Gap store.

I have had several great experiences ordering from Most recently, I got an e-mail indicating the Gap was having a major sale. I clicked through the e-mail and was directed to the sale part of the web site. I scrolled through the sale section in each category and added $10 t-shirts and other inexpensive items for my whole family. I averaged $8 per article of clothing when I was done. The web site worked without a hitch. When I was done, the checkout process went smoothly. I immediately received an e-mail acknowledging my order. My order shipped the next day. It arrived 3 days later. Each item was wrapped in a plastic bag and the entire order was securely packed in a cardboard box. Everything fit so we didn't need to return anything. However, it is nice to know you can return to the stores so you can save shipping costs.

The Gap has become a completely predictable experience. You know what to expect in clothing lines: reasonably-priced casual clothes. The web site is reliable and customer service is down to a science. The prices have been very low lately - probably a result of their poor financial performance and the down economy overall. However, there are great deals to be had and the service can't be beat.
