I have never written an online review, but felt absolutely compelled to do so after this experience.
Delivery was a COMPLETE NIGHTMARE!! I ordered a desk and while I was finalizing my order, I noticed a suggestion that I purchase 'inside delivery' for an additional $50. For this, the freight company making the delivery might bring it upstairs for you (quite a shock that it wasn't automatic, but ok, I'll manage). Then it reads that there's no guarantee of this, as it depends on the policy of the freight company itself. So I did not purchase it, figuring I could offer the guy $20 or so if he would bring it up the one flight of stairs to my apt.
The delivery company, Yellow Freight, called to schedule the delivery. During this call I learned several very troubling things: 1)they only deliver M-F, 9-5, so you have to stay home from work, 2) they do not do indoor delivery under any circumstances, so I would have paid the extra $50 for nothing, and 3) they could/would not even bring it up the four porch steps in front of my house.
Unless I had someone there to wait with me and help me get it inside, it would sit on the sidewalk. So I called my brother and he agreed to spend his Fri. afternoon waiting with me.
Well, at 4:50 I called the delivery company and was told that the driver was running late, that he was making a delivery downtown and then had a couple more in my neighborhood, after which he would arrive at my place. My brother couldn't wait anymore and left, which was just as well because at 7:00 I called back and was told that the truck was already back at the warehouse and the driver had gone home! WTF?!
So I determined to cancel my order altogether on Mon. morning, but before I did so, I got a call from the woman at the freight company. I ranted for a few minutes, saying there was no way I was going to take another day off of work in the hopes that they would actually show up, but she was very nice and apologetic. Also told me that I was FLAT-OUT LIED TO when I called at 4:50, because apparently the truck with my merchandise was called back to the warehouse much earlier that day!
She said that she understood if I wanted to cancel my order, but offered one final option - since it was their fault, she offered to have it delivered on Sat. between 9-12. I said fine, great, do you swear it will be here? She said absolutely.
So the guy shows up at almost 4:00. He then proceeds to leave his truck parked in the middle of my one way street. There were already cars waiting behind him when he rang my bell. I commented to him that he was 4 hours late and my help was (once again) gone and he asked if I still wanted my merchandise. I said of course, you're here now. He told me a lot of people decline the delivery because their help has left. And I said, "Oh, so this happens all the time?" He laughed and said "Oh yeah"!
I then said "you're not going to leave the truck there, are you? You can pull into that alley right there." He said "Nah, they'll just wait." I was in disbelief. Cars were multiplying behind his truck, with people honking horns and screaming out of their windows. He goes to the truck to unload my box and I say "What are you doing? At least pull over so they can get by! That is so not cool!" He shrugs and apparently finds the whole situation amusing.
They actually took down his license plate and called the police. I was completely mortified. I moved into this place two months ago and now I guess all my neighbors know I'm here!
The only bright side of this event was that two of my male neighbors who came out to see what all the commotion was about offered to carry the extremely heavy box up into my apt.
The desk itself is very nice, although would've taken me days and days, perhaps months to put together. If I didn't have someone who knew what he was doing build it for me I would have been completely lost.
So basically, if I could have foreseen all of this, I would not have ordered this merchandise. It is definitely not worth all the angst it caused me!
Furniturebuzz should be held responsible, as they are the ones who hire out these delivery companies and must surely be aware of what goes on. I'm thinking that they really just don't care, since they have their money already.
