I have been purchasing contacts at a reduced rate online, and decided to see if I could do the same when time came to get new glasses.
While most people I spoke to were unhappy with cost of purchasing glasses at a Optical shop, they were skeptical about purchasing frames without trying them on in person.
FramesDirect was the one site I found with many brand-name/designer frames. I used the handy program on FramesDirect that lets you upload a picture of yourself and see what the frames would look like, and came up with a few that I thought might work. Before placing my order, I went to a local shop and tried on a few frames. Each of the four frames that I liked were available at FramesDirect, and two of them were ones I'd picked using the program with my photo! The frames I went with were a Ted Baker frame, and would have cost a little over $400 at the shop (when include thin lens for my strong Rx, etc.) while the total cost to order them thru FramesDirect, was $250, incl duties of sending it from US to Canada. I submitted my RX and other info online, which was straightforward, and then faxed a copy of my Rx to the company. My glasses arrived within 2wks of placing the order, and are exactly what I had expected. I would definitely buy from them again.
