Full review
I found Alibris when a web search for an out-of-print book linked to the site. After browsing the extensive online catalogue, I bought ten books for $45, including shipping and handling. Two of the books would have each cost more than $50 new, so this was a bargain. I was told to expect the books in 12 calendar days. When my order hadn't arrived by Day 13, I inquired about it through the customer service web form (no phone number or e-mail address). When I hadn't received either the books or a response two days later, I searched the web for reviews of the company. To my dismay, Alibris was very poorly reviewed. Fortunately, my books arrived later that day. Given the great prices and the good condition of the books, I couldn't complain about the shipping delay or the mediocre packing.
One month later, I placed a second order: Three books for $21, including shipping and handling, which was a 75% discount to what the books would have cost new. They arrived in 6 to 11 days, all in very good condition.
I give Alibris great marks for selection, price (especially on textbooks), and website interface, but shipping times are average at best, and customer service is non-existent. I was satisfied with my orders, but it seems many others have been served a heap of heartache. Based on my experience and the reviews I've read, I'd say go with Alibris only if a) the same item is not sold by a more reputable vendor for a similar price, b) the savings Alibris offers is substantial, c) there is no rush on the order, and d) you're willing to tolerate a small but not insignificant chance of a total loss on the order.
