The eleven fearless workmen perched on a girder hundreds of feet above the streets of New York - casually eating their lunches, chatting, smoking - were photographed in 1932 by the equally daring Charles C. Ebbets (1905-1978). Published in the New York Herald Tribune, the dizzying shot, which has come to define Ebbets work, was taken on the 69th floor of the GE Building during the construction of Rockefeller Center. Ebbets also photographed the same workers napping on the beam. Ebbets, himself, was courageous: in addition to his photography, he held many daredevil jobs, including employment as a pilot, auto racer, wrestler and hunter. He was also prizefighter Jack Dempseys official staff photographer and a staff photographer for the Miami Daily News.
