The Beaujolais area, although part of greater Burgundy, is very distinct on many accounts. The villages have a different look : instead of slate, the houses have roofs made of red tiles reminiscent of Provence and the Mediterranean world. The soil, too, is pink granite (and not limestone as in CÃ´te-d`Or). This is where the Gamay grape is king. The type of pruning used in Beaujolais is called gobelet : no wires between the vines ; each plant grows by itself, independently from the others. Maison Joseph DROUHIN has always been deeply involved with the Beaujolais region and was indeed a pioneer when, in the early fifties, they were the first to bottle and ship Beaujolais Nouveau. As for Beaujolais Villages, it is a careful selection of various terroirs and micro-climates, all contributing to make this wine synonymous with charm and conviviality. The fruit comes from 50 year-old vines in a lieu-dit named 'Les Monthieux,' located in the commune of Lantignie, considered the finest in Beaujolais villages. The terroir is composed of clay and limestone soils with a favorable southwest exposure. Whole clusters of grapes are fermented, and then macerated for six days to extract characters of fruit and finesse. The wine is aged in old, non-reactive 50-hectoliter puncheons with no barrel aging so as not to introduce any overt oak aromas or flavors that may otherwise interfere with the purity of the fresh fruit. It is called 'The Lord of the Beaujolais'. In a good year for Moulin-a-Vent, you smell the characteristic aroma of liquorice found in the wines of the 'Cote de Nuits'.
