Jade has been known and valued by humanity for over 7,000 years. In China it has long be considered more precious than gold or silver. It is harder than steel and was used by early civilizations for tools. Early Chinese Dynasties demanded tribute payments be made in Jade and the raw stones, once collected, were carved into delicate and elaborate works of art. This fine example of Chinese hand craft was made in the 1980s. Fruit in Chinese culture has long been associated with prosperity. From early agrarian days when riches were measured by the harvest, fruits have played an important role in the health and wealth of the people. When ever you give a gift of fruits you are bestowing good fortune upon the recipient. That is why fruit plays such a prominent role in much of Chinese arts ant crafts. These hand carved jade and rose quartz cherries take the theme a step further. Stone endures essentially forever, so it follows that ones good fortune should also last as long. Less

This Shiwan ceramic figurine is a classic collectable. Shiwan has been a center for artistic pottery since the Tang Dynasty. This timeless statuary is still made today in the same city using the same glazes and techniques as were employed hundreds of years ago. In Chinese society the fisherman represents one of the four basic pursuits, along with farmer, scholar, and woodcutter. In Chinese the word for fish is a homonym for wealth or abundance, so the fisherman can have a greater symbolism of self reliance and seeking fortune. Perched on a end table, mantle, or window sill the fisherman evokes tranquility with it's simple and traditional styling, yet reminds you to work hard and fulfill you dreams. Less

The interlocking decorative elements of this unique porcelain collection are hand carved to create a design that is both visual and textured. Each piece is coated with a metallic and gold glaze to give it the appearance of metal. The style is based on the coalescing "chain" designs common on ancient Chinese bronze ware from 3,000 years ago. Bronze was the main material used in China to cast ritual vessels, musical instruments, and weapons up until the Han Dynasty (200BC to 200AD). Original examples of the ancient works can be found in prominent museums like the Smithsonian. Though based on a Chinese motif, the intricate design of these porcelains fit in with a variety of decors from Oriental to Deco to Modern to African. Reorient has a full selection of decorative bowls, plates, jars and an assortment of vases in this same design. These are completely hand crafted with excellent workmanship. As accent pieces the add a dramatic flare and bring an element of levity to a room. In terms of Feng Shui, the real gold used in the glaze will enhance positive Chi and encourage wealth. Less

Celadon is amongst the oldest forms of earthenware in the world. Our authentic chinese celadon is handcrafted using the same antiquated manufacturing techniques that have been employed in China for literally centuries. The unique green hue comes from an iron based glaze that reacts with both the heat and specific clays used in celadon production. The color is a soft cool green that emphasizes tranquility and serenity. While uniquely asian, celadon incorporates beautifully into both contemporary and traditional settings of both eastern and western influence. Less

Harkening back to Hong Kong's past the red rickshaw recalls the days of colonial rule in the dynamic city where East and West intersect. This miniature replica will bring back memories for any one who lived in, or visited, Hong Kong in the mid 20th century. Today fancy cars and double decked buses prowl the streets of the slender sky scrapper city, where the rickshaw is all but forgotten. As a room accent the vibrant red rickshaw will stand out against both light and dark colors; placed on a black Chinoiserie coffee or end table it will enhance the exotic touch to an oriental decor, as well as create a compelling color contrast. As a gift idea it is a fun way to package other Asian themed presents like oriental soaps, soy candles, or cook books. Collectors of Chinese figurines will also appreciate it as a welcome addition to their curio display. Less

Chinese dragons represent good fortune, prosperity and the energy of life itself. Chinese art often depicts a dragon surrounded by clouds, demonstrating its celestial power. Because the Dragon's domain is in the clouds they are thought to bring the rains needed for a fruitful harvest and are an auspicious symbol of impending prosperity. The simple and elegant shape of this 9" vase lends itself to both elaborate and austere displays; imagine it filled with an abundance of overflowing flowers or a Zen like Ikebana arrangement. A single bright Gerbera daisy is particularly well suited to the size and shape of this vase. On its sides are elephant heads with rings. This type of vase "ear" is common in both ancient Chinese and modern European designs. Oxblood red glaze, also know in the west as "sang de boeuf," is highly prized though out the world. It first appeared in China during the Song dynasty (960 to 1279). It is an extremely difficult glaze to control. Producing the distinctive color requires an exact balance of heat, kiln atmosphere and glaze ingredients. Minute amounts of copper create the rich red color, but too much oxygen in the kiln will bring out shades of blue, green or even purple. Pieces exhibiting wider color spectrums are referred to as transmutation glazed, even though the actual glaze used is the same as a red piece. Less

The Chinese tradition of carving water buffalo horn dates to ancient times. The color and consistency of the horn resembles a bakelite plastic. It is soft enough to be formed, even by crude tools, yet strong and light enough to be used as a handle or tool itself. Today buffalo horn is still used for fine writing and art brushes and sculpting knives. In art, buffalo horn is a sculpture medium, prized both for its fine natural finish and for its unique coloration. It ranges from a dark ebony color to a pale alabaster, often marbling and transitioning in patterns within the horn. Artist use the changes in shade to "color" their carvings and to create natural contrasts; The art is an intersection between careful planning and the chance of nature. Buffalo horn carvings also represent a deeper Taoist dynamic in Chinese art. Many carvings are of fish or flowing vegetation, things that are almost fluid in their movement, yet the horn itself is rigid. It is also dead tissue used to represent living plants and animals. It all plays into the Yin and Yang of Taoist thought that is a major component of most Chinese arts. All of Reorient's horn carvings are authentic water buffalo. In China, and thoughout Asia, water buffalo is farmed raised and heavily utilized for food and animal by-products and is not an endangered species. The horn carvings in Reorient's collections were originally made in the late 1970's in the aftermath of the Chinese cultural revolution. Less

Reorients vintage wooden mooncake molds are each individually hand carved and were originally produced in the late 1970s soon after Chinas Cultural Revolution. Though over 30 years old these mooncake molds are unused and like new. They were stored away in unmarked crates in the back of a Hong Kong warehouse until we recently discovered them. Each shows the true character of handcrafted wood carved with simple traditional tools. This round lotus mooncake mold imprints the Chinese double happiness character, surrounded by lotus leaves on the top of your mooncake. Collectors of antiques will find these mooncake molds to be a unique look into Chinas past. Bakers will enjoy these traditional mooncake molds for both their simplicity and authenticity and for making mooncakes for the Mid Autumn Chinese Moon Festival. Cork carving, while popular for its sheer beauty and mind boggling intricacy, is a reflection of philosphy and folklore. Most cork sculptures are pastoral scenes that incorporate trees, buildings and wildlife. In fact the importance of such landscape scenery in Chinese arts has its roots in Taoism, and the balance of heaven and earth. Mountains are rendered fading into the heavens to seemingly become one with each other. Elements of humanity, such as a house, a boat, or a bridge are peppered throughout the landscape. Thus earth, heaven and mankind are brought together in a single "path", or "way". The delicate art of cork carving epitomizes Taoist thought by utilizing the natural coarseness of cork to represent jagged mountain scenes. Yet the same material is used to create the smooth finely carved elements of buildings and trees. It is at once both crude and delicate, ying and yang together; it is whole in a very Taoist sense. Also in our cork carvings are the specific symbols of the crane and the pine tree. Both have long been held in chinese folklore as symbols of longevity. These fine cork carvings can be appreciated for their sheer quality of workmanship, but also for the centuries of history and culture behind their creation. Please note that cork carvings are extremely delicate. They have already endured the trip from the workshop where they were created in China to our warehouse in the USA. We take every precaution in packing and shipping these intricate items, however on occasion some small pieces of the scenery may dislodge during transit. We hope you will understand that this should be considered inevitable under the circumstances. Small pieces are easily removed from the enclosure and their absence will not detract from the overall artistry of this fragile craft. Less

Each Peace plaque is hand carved from a single piece of Camphor wood. In addition to the longevity character, the intricate design also incoporates bats for good fortune and ancient Chinese coins. In China the bat symbolizes "good fortune," because it's pronunciation is very similar, differing only in tone. The likeness of coins is used in Feng Shui to attract wealth.Champhor wood comes from a slow growing evergreen tree of the same name. Native to China and most of Asia, it is a softwood once reserved only for the carving of religious icons. Its grain may be of a single consistent color or streaked with dark viens. Camphor wood is naturally pest resistant and is used for chest and cabinet making as it acts as a natural moth repellent. It is also used for silver chests as the fumes help prevent silver from tarnishing. Each wall plaque has a brass hanger on the back. Less

Less

This set of 4 porcelain rice bowls uses children, chrysanthemum flowers and Chinese characters as decorative elements. The design theme can be traced to the Ming Dynasty. The bowls were produced in the mid 1970s soon after the cultural revolution. Each bowl has four characters, which together translate as "Riches and Long Life." Paired with the purple chrysanthemums and young boys the theme becomes a wish for prosperity for many generations. These are beautiful addition to your dinner table and make a thoughtful gift to friends and family, especially for Chinese New Year, anniversaries and birthdays. The bowls are food and dishwasher safe. Due to a gold metallic glaze on the rim they are not suitable for microwave ovens. Made of strong durable porcelain and perfect for a bowl of rice or soup. Chinese rice bowls are traditionally made to fit comfortably in the palm of the hand but the size also makes them ideal for salsa and dips or small portions for children. You can also use the bowls for decorative occasions like floating flowers or burning incense. Less

The Rose Medallion design has been a mainstay of Chinese export porcelain since trade with the west was first established. This beautiful porcelain powder box is adorned with the hand painted figures and flowers of the traditional style and is a useful item for house hold use. Fill it with potpourri, small scented candles, or incense. On a desk it can hold paper clips, push pins or little bits of clutter. In the kitchen it's just the thing for rubber bands, twist ties, or other little necessary tools that are prone to untidiness. In the bedroom, on the vanity or night stand, it's an attractive depository for lose change, nail polish or make-up, receipts, or the myriad of misplaced mélange that needs someplace to hide away. Traditional Chinese tea set with 4 cups, tea pot and a serving tray. Made of durable porcelain, dishwasher and microwave safe. The tea pot holds about 28oz of water which is roughly 3 and a half measuring cups. The tea cups hold just over 4oz each, which is roughly half a measuring cup. When serving from the tea pot you can get roughly 6.5 of the tea cups filled before running out of water. The tea pot is 6" tall to the top of the lid or 5" tall when measuring to the top of the spout. The traditional Chinese design is called rice pattern, named after the tiny translucent windows that adorn the porcelain body. Historically these were created by leaving grains of rice in the clay before firing in the kiln. Once fired the rice disintegrates leaving the little window like decoration. Less

This carved soap stone shoe was made in tribute to the Temple of the Sleeping Buddha, first built during the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907). The temple lies in the outskirts of Beijing, and incorporated in the Xi Shan public garden. It is surrounded by orchid gardens and peach groves. The temple includes a bronze Buddha statue cast in 1321 (Yuan Dynasty). The statue weighs 54 tons and is about 17 feet long and lies on its side, sleeping, with no shoes. On either side of the Buddha are sets of huge shoes, left as gifts in case the Buddha ever needs to go for a walk. There are also scores of shoes left as gifts from local people. The shoe is of the classic Chinese slipper style and is completely hand carved from Yellow Flower stone. As a decorative item this hand crafted curio adds character to any collector's menagerie. It is also useful as an incense burner. Since each shoe is carved from natural stone there will be variations in color and texture from stone to stone. Each piece was carved in by Chinese artisans in the mid 1980s. Less

The art of reverse painting on glass is among China's most ancient art forms. It is a painstaking technique that demands that the minutest details be applied before the broadest strokes. Placing the artwork on the inside of small bottles makes the workmanship all the more intricate as only miniscule brushes can be lowered into the bottles' interior. Each picture is painted virtually a drop of paint at a time. This set of four bottles has scenes painted on both sides of each bottle. The crane is a traditional symbol of longevity in Chinese culture. Here they are also accompanied by seasonal foliage and auspicious evergreens, such as pine and bamboo. This is a beautiful collection for collectors and aficionados of feng shui. Less

Each Longevity plaque is hand carved from a single piece of Camphor wood. Less
