Planted by vineyard manager Mimi Nye in 1991, our vineyard at Canoe Ridge Estate has grown before our eyes to produce more concentrated and opulent wines. The 2000 Canoe Ridge Vineyard Reserve Merlot is ablend comprised primarily of grapes grown in Block #13 ofour estate vineyard. This part of the vineyard shows a great balancein the soil with the fine sandy loam prevalent at our vineyardmixed with and overlying the volcanic basalt that is typicalof the Columbia Valley appellation. This mixture slows vinegrowth, which produces grape clusters and berries that are smalland very concentrated in flavor and color.

This 2009 vintage is an elegant expression of Canoe Ridge Estate Merlot offering dark cherry fruit character. We added Syrah and Malbec to blend for enhanced complexity. This is a great food wine and its dusty tannins make it a perfect match with Italian food.

Very warm growing conditions in late August and early September caused sugarsto accumulate quickly in the fruit. Canoe Ridge Estate Chardonnay is refined and elegant and we like to enhance that style in cellar. This Chardonnay delivers fresh apple, pear and spice aromas and flavors. finish is graceful with light spice notes, which are a result of the restrained French oak treatment. Thevines werena t even aware of the two months of wind that threatened our Merlot.Still, we worked harder in the vineyard than any previous year to adjust for theunusual weather. It was the third coldest growing season on record, making it achallenge to ripen the fruit, but the fall warmth allowed the fruit to reach full flavormaturity and produce the best vintage of the 1990s for Canoe Ridge Vineyard.
