Alpha Zeta was started in 1999 when David Gleave and New Zealand winemaker, Matt Thompson, set out to produce a range of modern, fruit-forward wines from the hills outside Verona. Their aim was to work closely with the local growers to obtain high quality grapes by reducing yields and harvesting later in the season. Aged for 6 months in oak, Alpha Zeta Corvina is a rich, food friendly red with aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry and dark chocolate. Supple tannins and balanced acidity are complemented by a peppery finish. Product of Italy Alcohol by Volume: 12.5% Bottle Size: 750ml

Mindful of the region's fascinating past, Belfrage brings its story up to date, discussing such subjects as geology and geography, grape varieties, and the latest research into Sangiovese, the variety used in the top wines of Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. He also clarifies the regulatory framework and follows the recent controversial developments in viticulture and winemaking, including the rise of the Super-Tuscans... Less

There are already at least four well-established wine guides in Italy. Is there really any need for another? Slow Food believes so. In January 2012 it will launch the first English edition of its own wine guide, Slow Wine, which adopts a new approach to wine criticism and looks beyond what is in the glass. For 20 years, Slow Food co-published the Italian Wines guide with Gambero Rosso, arguably the most famous and influential wine publication in Italy. The much sought-after "three glasses" awards stimulated producers to aim for maximum quality, hence to change the Italian wine scene and its image abroad. But the Slow Food quality criteria have developed in the meantime; they now embrace more than just sensory virtues and also incorporate ethical and environmental values. The movement's... Less

This wine is from Italy, Umbria region. The 2004 Sagrantino di Montefalco Pagliaro is more linear than the 2005 and perhaps just a touch more advanced as well. Sweet tobacco, herb and earth aromas waft out of the glass followed by a perfumed core of fruit that emerges over time. A long, refined finish rounds out the wine nicely. The 2004 is more ethereal than the 2005, but it, too, is quite beautiful, not to mention a terrific effort in what was a challenging vintage for this property. Interestingly, what seems to come through most in tasting the 2005 and 2004 side by side are the qualities of this vineyard first, and those of vintage second. The 2004 Pagliaro was macerated on the skins for 48 days and spent 32 months in large, neutral casks. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. My visit... Less

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast Mocali Brunello di Montalcino is a remarkable red; relative to comparable Montalcino bottles, this complex Sangiovese is a truly remarkable value. Vinified from grapes grown in marl and limestone soil, fermented in stainless steel tanks, and aged for three years in large Slovenian oak casks, this wine maintains traces of terroir while benefiting from the winemaker's skill; both the nose and palate are infused with a subtle minerality distinctive to the Mocali vineyards, while the oak influence is present but perfectly integrated. With a complex and balanced nose of raspberry, licorice, chocolate, sweet spice, cinnamon, and coffee, this Brunello is concentrated, vibrant, and utterly ageworthy. In Italy, wine is more than an accompaniment to food; it's a cultural institution and a source of national pride. Each of Italy's 20 significant wine-producing regions is featured here, with comprehensive details about local grape varieties and notable winemakers. In all, over 2,000 of Italy's best wines and producers are profiled and their recent vintages rated, from the powerful Amarone wines of Veneto in the north to Tuscany's lush Sangiovese grape-based chiantis and bold "Super Tuscans," through the many Sicilian wines made from the ancient cattaratto and carricante vines dotting the island. Of special interest to travelers are the regional maps, restaurant reviews, and tips on matching wines with the local cuisine, along with a glossary of Italian wine terms.
