Live tracks, studio tracks, intimate combos, big orchestras, gospel choirs--and music by Bob Dylan, Barry Gibb, Leonard Cohen, Jimmy Webb, and George Gershwin! The only constant, of course, is Simone's resonating voice--mother to the likes of Tracy Chapman and Joan Armatrading. It's an impressive survey of sounds, although it doesn't make for a cohesive listening experience; you're more likely to want to sample a track here and a track there, depending on your mood. He continues, even after 40 years of recording, to take wild chances on this CD. The first few songs on the set are fairly straightforward (if one can consider an uptempo rendition of Baltimore Oriole to be conventional). The music, which includes originals by Donald Fagen and Pat Metheny then becomes funky for a bit; from the sixth number on, the performances are quite modern yet not really classifiable as anything but creative jazz. Betty Roché was a superb but little-recorded singer who had a stint with Earl Hines's band and was with Duke Ellington in the 1940s and '50s. A genuine jazz singer rather than just a big band's requisite woman balladeer, Roché had an almost brassy attack, a vibrant sense of swing, and the ability to scat hornlike solos. Recorded in 1956 for Bethlehem, Take the A Train was Roché's debut recording under her own name, and it reveals her as a complete singer, with a warmly intimate delivery and a moving way with ballads. The independent, Massachusetts- based label Whaling City Sound is best known for jazz, but R&B is the main ingredient on this live album by New England singer Sarah Brooks. Documenting a concert at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in New Bedford, MA in late 2006, Under the Bones of the Great Blue Whale is essentially 1960s/1970s- style soul but with jazz and rock overtones -- and many of the jazz overtones come from the band that accompanies Brooks, especially alto saxophonist Marcus Monteiro (who is featured extensively). Nonetheless, this 68-minute CD is an R&B album first and foremost, although many of the songs that Brooks performs didn't come out of R&B.
