Pearl Jam Twenty [DVD] [2011] [NTSC]

In honor of Pearl Jam s twentieth anniversary, Academy Award®-winning director and music journalist Cameron Crowe created a definitive portrait of the seminal band carved from over 1,200 hours of rarely and never-before-seen footage, plus 24 hours of recently shot concert and interview footage. Pearl Jam Twenty chronicles the years leading up to the band s formation, the chaos that ensued soon after their rise to megastardom, their step back from center stage, and the creation of a trusted circle that would surround them giving way to a work culture that would sustain them. Told in big themes and bold colors with blistering sound, the film is carved from over 1,200 hours of rarely seen and never before seen footage spanning the band s career. Pearl Jam Twenty is the definitive portrait of Pearl Jam: part concert film, part intimate insider-hang, part testimonial to the power of music and uncompromising artists.DVD includes the feature-length documentary plus 26 minutes of never-before-seen bonus features.

It’s not uncommon for people to act surprised when I bring up Pearl Jam.  More frequently than not I hear the same response: “they’re still around?”  Yes, yes they are, and this documentary tells their story using a mix of present-day interviews and archival... Read full review »

The early 1990s popular rock scene was defined by several bands that meteorically rose from the underground to the mainstream before quickly succumbing to addiction, internal conflicts, and death.  Though two of them, Alice and Chains and Soundgarden, have managed to rise from the ashes many... Pearl Jam-pearl Jam Twenty

Cameron Crowe's affectionate documentary PEARL JAM TWENTY details the tumultuous history, and pre-history, of one of the most iconic grunge bands to emerge from the fertile Seattle music scene of the late '80s. Culled from hundreds of hours of private footage, as well as from extensive interviews with band members Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Mike McCreedy, and Stone Gossard, the movie begins by explaining the forces that turned Seattle into such a musical hotbed, and then discusses the death of Andy Wood, the lead singer of Mother Love Bone and how that tragedy led to the formation of Pearl Jam. The film covers the group's quick rise to the top of the rock world, the tensions that developed in the band, and their memorable attempts to battle Ticketmaster over their inflated prices. PEARL JAM TWENTY played at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
