It's A Winner

Pros Image quality; build quality; ease of operation; brilliant LCD; true widescreen
Cons night mode only good at very close range;software very dated and limited
Recommended it? Yes

This is a brilliant camera. The Zeiss lens and relatively large CCD pick up colours and details very well indeed. The True Widescreen Mode enabled me to produce sensational, full-quality 16:9 movies. It is so easy to use and connects into popular editing software like Pinnacle 9 (which by the way... Read full review »

Pros Ease of use, excellent picture quality, good sound.
Cons Difficult to hold with one hand.
Recommended it? Yes

After having a S-VHS camera, I'm very pleased with the results of this camera. I chose it due to being competitively priced against other models with equivalent features.

Connecting through the firewire port and using Pinnacle's Studio 9+ to burn to DVD, the results are excellent, colour... Read full review »

Pros compact! Great analog video. Easy to use. Good low-light solutions. Clean audio.
Cons Unexpectedly poor stills. Broke twice. Learning more about digital video than I really...
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this camera as a new parent, hoping to preserve some of those precious early moments. I was excited that a megapixel still with high-quality optics would print well at up to 5x7, so I wouldn't generally need to also carry a camera. I expected that with the USB and Firewire ports I would be... Read full review »

Pros easy of use, touch screen, very small size, light weight, nice casing
Cons quality of picture, colors seem to be washed out, too pricey,
Recommended it? No

With the great disappointment I gave up with my attempts to tape the rainbow with DCR-HC40 because nothing appeared neither on the LCD display nor even in the viewfinder. I tried to do the same shot with my old Sony camcorder (HI8) manufactured over 6 years ago and got an excellent result. Read full review »

DON'T BUY!!!! Design Problem!

Pros It fits easily into a trash compactor.
Cons No factory support for a documented problem that disables the camcorder.
Recommended it? No

There is a documented problem with some of these camcorders in that they discharge the batteries overnight, even when attached to the AC converter. (See camcorderinfo.com).

Sony denies this problem exists, and will not repair it for free, once the 90 day warranty expires. (Unfortunately,... Read full review »

My Sony DCR-HC40 Has Same Problems As Others

bystfan Aug 11, 2005

Pros Camera has a good balance of features vs. usability
Cons Camera has apparent design flaws which Sony refuses to manage/own
Recommended it? No

Man, am I disappointed in Sony! I would love to use harsher words and foul language, but fear that my review may be struck down as a result. I would rather get my message out, that yet another HC40 is a dud. Same problems as others:
1. Battery drains quickly
2. Charging problems

Pros It was nice while it was alive.
Cons SONY=POOR product.
Recommended it? No

I rec'd this camcorder as a gift for Xmas '04. It was non-functional by May '05, soon after the 90 day warranty expired. We were recording my older daughter's graduation when video gave out and only recorded sound. The camcorder plays back but doesn't record video anymore. What's the point.

Pros Nice compact camcorder with good picture quality & alright night shot quality
Cons Sony's warranty & customer service
Recommended it? No

Also, has charging problems which didn't start until one month after the 6month warranty. Contacted Sony telephonically & they were very abrupt & what I would call Rude. I use to think highly of Sony, but that's changing quickly. Read another review that claimed Sony said they had a bad batch of... Read full review »
