Chapin's discography extends beyond the seven albums he and his trio released in the 1990s, but he never sounded more complete and rounded than when with his trio mates--bassist Mario Pavone and drummers Steve Johns and, for most sessions, Michael Sarin. This is the first time on CD for this classic 1968 Blue Note release, which takes its title from Donaldson's fine take on the James Brown funker Say It Loud, I'm Black And I'm Proud. With a band featuring trumpeter Blue Mitchell, guitarist Jimmy Ponder, organist Charles Earland, and drummer Leo Morris, alto master Donaldson turns in a fine funkified set. Detailed liner notes.

This 15 track CD consists of three separate performances: the first (7 tracks) was recorded in Baden, Switzerland on Nov. 9, 1968 and features Benny Carter and the Orchestre Henri Chaix with Jo Gagliardi, Andre Faist, Roger Zufferey, Alain Du Bois and others. The second performance (4 tracks) was recorded in Geneva, Switzerland at Radio Geneve (RSR) on Dec. 16, 1957 and features Bill Coleman and the Henri Chaix Quintet with Michel Pilet, Alain Du Bois, Max Hediguer and others. The third performance (4 tracks) features the same previous line-up (except Bob Jaquillard replaces Max Hediguer) recorded at the same location on Sept. 6, 1958.

Bobby Watson leads a quartet in a 1984 concert in Germany on this CD, with pianist Jim McNeely, bassist Todd Coolman, and drummer Adam Nussbaum. The alto saxophonist's extended solo that opens But Not for Me is a bit unusual, as it is initially staccato before he gradually smooths out his sound to resemble his normal tone in a driving bop arrangement, though he can't resist playing a laugh like riff to tickle his audience. He also adds quite a few flourishes and sighs to the opening of Thelonious Monk's 'Round Midnight before settling down. Conga player Birger Sulsbruck takes the place of Nussbaum for an unusual interpretation of Eubie Blake's You're Lucky to Me.
