The Meiji Era was one of great renewal for Japan, where swords and killing were outlawed. However, many survivors from the time of Revolution still live, lurking in the shadows and waiting for a chance to use their killing blades again. Only Kenshin Himura, formerly one of the most brutal of killers, hopes to keep his swordsman's honor and still live in the new era.

Kenshin has a bittersweet reunion with an old colleague and friend, Sanosuke Sagara, who is also a member of the Sekihoutai. The two share a deep relationship that is tested when another Sekihoutai survivor comes up with a plan to avenge their fellow warriors' deaths. So, Sanosuke gets involved in a plot to bomb a government building, something Kenshin cannot accept and will not allow. However, Kenshin has never attempted to stop a close friend before, and he must put their friendship and the memory of his dead friends behind him before he can prevent the act of vengeance Sanosuke wishes to commit.
