The Bottom Line:
Save some money and get great results from this Olay product that can be purchased at most any drug store
Up until last year, my nightly beauty routine was pretty simple – wash and apply a good moisturizer. But I noticed my skin losing some of its firmness so I decided to start diligently using a firming serum in addition to a moisturizer. I tried a few, from expensive department store products to more affordable ones from drug stores. Much to my surprise, my favorite was not one of the more expensive ones, but the reasonably priced Olay Regenerist Night Resurfacing Elixir.
I purchased a two-pack of Regenerist Night Resurfacing Elixir at Costco for around $35. Each of the bottles contained 1.7 ounces of product. I checked around online and saw a wide variance in price, from as little as $17 for a single bottle upwards to $29. So shop around as there are lots of deals on this elixir -- don’t ever pay full price.
The elixir comes in a pinkish tinted clear plastic bottle. (This may be new packaging as I see it online in a red bottle.) It has a light gel-like consistency and dispenses easily from the pump dispenser. Although it might look and feel a little bit more classy and high end in a glass bottle, I have no complaints with the packaging. I’ve broken a few glass bottles in my time, so it’s probably better this way anyhow.
Regenerist Night Resurfacing Elixir contains glycolic acid, which helps resurface skin as this ingredient provides chemical-based exfoliation, resulting in softer, smoother skin. At the same time the elixir’s antioxidants and moisturizers provide soothing hydration to tighten skin’s surface. It is oil-free and fragrance-free, although it has a very slight scent.
Olay says that you should see a marked improvement in your skin in as little as seven days if used on a nightly basis. It is not recommended for daytime usage as glycolic acid can make the skin more sun sensitive. In fact, it is recommended that you use a moisturizer with at least SPF 15 during the day if you use this product at night.
I need about two pumps from the bottle as I use the elixir not only on my face, but also on my neck and chest. Although glycolic acid is a powerful ingredient, it doesn’t sting or irritate my skin. I’m able to apply around my eyes with no problem. Regenerist Night Resurfacing Elixir absorbs quickly and easily. Although it is a gel, it is not sticky at all, and leaves my skin feeling smooth and noticeably firmer immediately upon application.
Olay says that you can use this product in lieu of a regular nighttime moisturizer. Perhaps in my younger days I might have, but now that I live in Colorado and am in need of more moisture, I usually follow up with their Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream. That being said, sometimes my skin does get a bit oily so I do sometimes skip the heavier cream and just use the Elixir. It’s great for those days as it is not a heavy moisturizer, but yet it provides sufficient hydration for normal/combination skin types.
I have been using Regenerist Night Resurfacing Elixir for about two months now and I feel like it has really improved my skin. In particular my neck area was not as firm as it once was and since using this product I’ve noted a marked improvement in the firmness of this area. My skin is remarkably smoother as well. I also noted that my moisturizer works better when I use it combination with the elixir. Perhaps the exfoliating of the glycolic acid makes the moisturizer absorb better into my skin.
I’ve always been a bit luke warm toward Olay skin care products, probably because I associate the brand so much with their original Oil of Olay that my mom used. But Regenerist Night Resurfacing Elixir is a quality product that can be purchased for a fraction of the cost of similar products from higher end department store brands. I really did see an improvement within a week and coupled with its reasonable cost for a glycolic acid based product, that makes it worth 5 stars.
