The great Cleveland Browns running back Jim Brown used to get up slowly after he'd been tackled, whether he was hurt or not. If he always did this, Brown reasoned, the opposition could never tell if they had inflicted any damage. He would rise to his feet like an old man, leaving observers to wonder if he'd really slowed down. Phlegmatic alto saxist Lee Konitz has probably never before found himself in the same sentence with Jim Brown. But, like the wily fullback, Konitz has made it impossible for the rest of us to tell if he's gotten old. True, he helped Miles Davis launch his Birth of the Cool in 1949. But since then, Konitz has consistently worked to prune his style of ornamentation, to leave unexpected spaces between his phrases, to avoid fast, note-filled passages when less busy is... Less

Since he played on some of the earliest Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker records in 1945, Brown is regarded as the father of modern bass playing. He made his name at that time with the groundbreaking role he played on Gillespie's One Bass Hit. He has been a leading virtuoso for half a century and his tone and dexterity are still something to wonder at, as was shown in an unforgettable master class that he gave to students for a BBC television broadcast. His Solo for Unaccompanied Bass here is another dazzling performance. Elsewhere, he's in an unusual setting before an all-star West Coast big band playing a set of arrangements by Marty Paich. Brown bites powerfully into his featured role, notably in an incredibly fast After You've Gone, and he's helped by key soloists like trumpeter... Less

If there's any doubt that '70s-style jazz-fusion is back, Chambers squashes it here on this brilliantly recorded, flawlessly executed session. Thirty years ago, there were various names for this kind of jazz-rock and funk. The Brecker Brothers called it skunk funk. George Duke said it was snake funk in a dunk, and Stanley Clarke once tagged a tune Lopsy Lu. Whatever it’s called, it's the highest level of jazz proficiency blended with the energy of rock and a sophisticated form of R&B or funk. It's no wonder that the only cover tunes on this smoking nine-song set were written by James Brown (Talkin' Loud and Saying Nothing) and Sly Stone (In Time). Chambers, who played with George Clinton's Parliament/Funkad elic as a teenager and currently plays for Santana, is that rare power drummer who... Less

Resonance comes from a 1974 date at Donte's in Hollywood, with guitarist Joe Pass leading a trio of Jim Hughart on electric bass and Frank Severino on drums. It's easy to wonder about a 26-year-old session appearing for the first time in 2000, but the only question here is why it took so long. Pass is in wonderful form on both fast tempos and ballads, generating quicksilver choruses with rhythmic variety and a sound at once light and resonant. Most of the material is familiar, but there's still thought and affection in the choice of standards. Corcovado has Pass developing a distinctive approach to the bossa nova rhythm, and The Lamp Is Low retains its melodic interest even at the rapid clip he sets for it. There are as many moments with Pass in a reflective mood. How Deep Is the Ocean? ... Less

After working with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Jeff Lorber, Doc Powell, Bobby Lyle, Chieli Minucci, Peter White, Maxwell and Usher, Andre felt it was time to work on a solo project. The result is this 10 track self produced album Full Circle. The opening track Funkborne incorporates deep elements of blues and funk. The tribute to his son, When Jadon Smiles showcases gospel undertones. There are numerous smooth jazz stylings including Why Not which features noted smooth jazz artist Kevin Toney, Night Riders, Gypsy, which features Earth, Wind & Fire's original guitarist Al McKay. Foot Steips, Mystic Journey, features R&B's hottest sensation, Terrell. The album includes guest appearances by celebrated keybooardist Jeff Lorber, the legendary Tower Of Power guitarist Bruce Conte and Jazz... Less

Import pressing of this album originally released in 1978 on vinyl only, now 24-bit remastered and packaged in a digi-pack. Featuring both his vocal and solo trumpeting skills this pressing includes 7 tracks, including alternate takes of 'Black Eyes' & 'How Deep Is The Ocean'. Chet Baker was a primary exponent of the West Coast school of cool jazz in the early and mid-'50s. As a trumpeter, he had a generally restrained, intimate playing style and he attracted attention beyond jazz for his photogenic looks and singing. But his career was marred by drug addiction. Altoist Bartz was much mocked for his turn toward R&B after his stint with Miles in the early seventies. But his LPs, before his complete conversion, show vision and sound like nothing else on record, naturally reflecting his interest in free jazz, pop songs, Caribbean music and modal bop. And why not? If Stevie Wonder can listen to Pharaoh Sanders, why shouldn't the compliment be returned? This pairing of two rare LPs on a single CD, beside relieving samplers of much confusion, also gives a platform to the little heard vocalist Andy Bey (not to mention the rarely heard but overexposed vocals of Bartz) Africans Unite and Whasaname are propulsive stand-out tracks, and sometimes the listener finds oneself in cosmic territory when one least expects it. --D. At the beginning of the opening number Dippermouth Blues, Max Collie's Rhythm Aces sound so ragged that one wonders if this is going to be an overly primitive set of Dixieland. But the band quickly becomes more coherent without losing its spirit. The packaging, which lists most of the songs as traditional without giving its composers and has Weary Blues listed as Traveling Blues, could be better but the music is highly enjoyable. Cornetist Phil Mason and trombonist- leader Max Collie deserve to be better known. My Man (a blues, not the well-known standard) has good-time singing by Pauline Pearce and Marilyn Middleton Pollock. Pearce also pops up on a couple other vintage pieces. But the main reason to get this set is for the exciting ensembles. The Max Collie band, one of the top British... Less

Curtis Bahn, bass player extraordinaire, takes his virtuoso performance to unbelievable heights of energy and musical mayhem with a sophisticated computer-based interactive electronic system that he himself designed and built. The sounds are great. Even surprising. In fact, they're so surprising that you wonder: How can this be done? And the whole concept is so unconventional, you ask: How could someone even think of it? But the madness in his method becomes clear when you realize that at the center of his r!g is his acoustical 'Sbass' which contains a variety of electronic sensors that greatly extend his performance possibilities. It also becomes clear that the musical power of extended performance together with responsive electronics is formidable, and in this case it allows him to mix... Less
