Turn Up the Barn is the third full-length CD by Dirtball. An apt title, this project was recorded in a retired dairy barn outside of Richmond, VA thus affording the band a comfortable and inspirational environment conducive to the Dirtball sound. The title was taken from a neil Young quote.

This is the second in a series of recordings designed to provide square dancing enjoyment to persons with little or no square dancing experience. In this CD a number of popular square dances have been recorded. These dances have been chosen for their variety and ability to teach the dancers additional calls or basics of square dancing. As in the other CD's in the series, the chief end of any dancing is the enjoyment received. So to increase the pleasure, all directions for each dance are listed in the CD booklet along with the calls as they are heard on the recording. Last Rights is an odd but enlightening CD documentary of the Texas singer- songwriter's life and work produced by Chinga Chavin, a crazed Texan in the Kinky Friedman mold. Given its sepulchral title and the fact that it was recorded the year before he died, this set has the feel of a farewell note. Throughout its 23 cuts, newly recorded solo versions of Van Zandt's best-known tunes--Tecumseh Valley and If I Needed You among them--are interspersed with poignant and honest comments. He tells the story of how he wrote Pancho & Lefty and explains how Lightnin' Hopkins influenced his music. Amid scores of albums on both LP and CD, only one official live George Jones album exists: 1985's First Time Live! This in-concert performance, introduced by Alan Jackson, is actually the soundtrack of the long-available Jones concert video Live in Tennessee, taped in Knoxville in the early 1990s. Jones, newly signed to MCA at the time, performs a muscular, vigorous set heavy on hits from his 1972-1991 Epic period and adds his MCA single, the maternal tribute She Loved a Lot in Her Time. He reaches back further for his 1963 hit The Race Is On and a ballad medley mixing The Grand Tour with earlier material. Many of the songs on this three-CD box set appear on other albums, but not in these versions. These are transcriptions from Autry's Melody Ranch radio show, which aired from 1940 to 1956. As such, they offer up some powerful nostalgia, even to listeners who weren't alive then. Happily, though, the music's just as potent on its own terms. Hollywood's singing cowboys (and their music) had little to do with real cowboys (and their music), but it's hard to debate authenticity while Autry is so agreeably crooning Back in the Saddle Again, You Are My Sunshine, and Don't Fence Me In to the friends and neighbors out there in radio land. --John Morthland
