Pat Metheny’s Orchestrion refers to a 19th century hybrid musical instrument of the same name that contained (usually) a wind orchestra, various percussion instruments, and sometimes a piano played by a pinned cylinder or a music roll -- like a player piano. Metheny designed and plays one here thanks to a commissioned group of inventors, advanced solenoid switch technology, and pneumatics. This invention includes pianos, marimbas, bells, basses, “guitarbots,” percussion, cymbals, drums, loads of tuned bottles, and synth and fabricated acoustic instruments, played by Metheny triggering everything with his guitar. The viola da gamba, the ancestor of the modern cello, itself had antecedents that have been only sparsely preserved. Two of them are examined on this Spanish-British release, played by Fernando Marín in reconstructed versions featuring such down-and-dirty original equipment as sheep gut strings. The lyra-viol is rather mysteriously described by Marín as a fusion of the viola da gamba, Indian bowed stringed instruments with resonant metal strings, and the Italian Lira de arco for polyphonic playing. The last phrase is key; it's a small viol with a large number of strings laid out in such a way that the instrument can produce extended passages of polyphony. Despite lineup changes, Charlie Hunter's trio has always consisted of a sax player and a drummer in addition to Hunter's seven- or eight-string guitar heroics. After about a decade with that template, John Ellis added a bit of keyboard and melodica to his sax for Copperopolis, almost presciently setting the stage for Mistico. With Ellis moving on to concentrate on a solo career, Hunter decided to form a brand new trio, bringing in Simon Lott on drums and Erik Deutsch on keyboards. That's right: no sax. The varied keyboards vs. sax give the album a sound that's less overtly jazz than previous efforts, but Copperopolis also showcased Hunter and company in more of a rock mood and that trend continues on Mistico.
