Supernatural was designed with the intention of having Santana cross over to a new audience, but Slash was made with his old fans in mind, bringing in gnarled old rockers like Ozzy, Lemmy, and Iggy to carry the brunt of the work, slipping in a few new faces along the way. The downside to a success like Thriller is that it's nearly impossible to follow, but Michael Jackson approached Bad much the same way he approached Thriller -- take the basic formula of the predecessor, expand it slightly, and move it outward. This meant that he moved deeper into hard rock, deeper into schmaltzy adult contemporary, deeper into hard dance -- essentially taking each portion of Thriller to an extreme, while increasing the quotient of immaculate studio craft. The first masterpiece of what was only termed trip-hop much later, Blue Lines filtered American hip-hop through the lens of British club culture, a stylish, nocturnal sense of scene that encompassed music from rare groove to dub to dance. The album balances dark, diva-led club jams along the lines of Soul II Soul with some of the best British rap (vocals and production) heard up to that point, occasionally on the same track. Here go Mew again, with a characteristicall y ineffable album cover and a suitably absurdist title to accompany it. One might think it was the latest piece of studio wizardry from the brilliantly off-kilter Danish group, but it is, in fact, ostensibly a best-of collection. It's hard to say what the impetus is for a band like Mew -- whose albums are each so uniformly crafted as a whole -- to come out with a set like this, but as it turns out, it's not entirely unwarranted. On When the World Knows Your Name, the band blends AOR, Celtic flourishes, and dashes of blue-eyed soul to create a polished album that, while it won't make any best-of lists in a hurry, has more than a few pleasures to offer nevertheless. Deacon Blue isn't on the mark all the time. Any percussionists or devotees of percussion owe it to themselves to investigate this remarkable collection of works performed by French virtuoso Roland Auzet. The set includes three CDs with 13 substantial pieces, about half of them recorded for the first time, as well as a DVD of Auzet playing two Xenakis solos, Psappha and Rebonds. Those two works, along with Yoshihisa Taïra's Convergence, are the only purely solo works on the set; the rest also involve either electronics, voices, or orchestra. The music is largely modernist or postmodern, and the inclusion of an arrangement of Milhaud's Concerto pour marimba, vibraphone et orchestre sounds somewhat out of place.
