That's no slight feat, especially for a reheated version of Usher's Yeah! made by a fresh-faced teenager who reps a little town in Virginia that rhymes with grab a hammock. On Run It!, Chris Brown is boosted by production from Scott Storch and an appearance by Juelz Santana. In 2001, Sufjan Stevens followed up his debut album, A Sun Came, with Enjoy Your Rabbit, a series of fourteen instrumentals programmatically inspired by the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Much later, in 2006, Bryce Dessner (The National, Dark Was the Night compilation, Clogs) suggested that Sufjan re-arrange the entirety of Enjoy Your Rabbit for Osso, a string quartet that had previously contributed strings to Sufjan's Illinois and My Brightest Diamond's Bring Me The Workhorse. The result is Run Rabbit Run.

One of Chick Corea's most ambitious projects was the recording of almost 60 hours of music with nine different groups over a three-week run at the Blue Note in December 2001; it must have been a challenge to choose the dozen performances for this two-CD set. This cast recording, dating from five years after the show's one-month off-Broadway run, is about a match for the David Kirshenbaum score and the Hunter Foster book, all based on the Herman Raucher novel and screenplay. Kirshenbaum's music is close to Stephen Sondheim at various points, but that isn't a bad place to be -- there might not be a big tune here, but the score is reasonably inventive (though it may place a little too much emphasis on the comedic side of the testosterone- driven antics of the hero and his two friends), and the book has its clever moments. The cast members throw everything they've got into the material at hand, and the recording may actually be slightly superior to the score in that regard. Although it has many great moments, this Don Giovanni, pieced together from a run of live performances in January and February 1997, struggles to find its stride. Abbado brings out orchestral textures and colors that other conductors often overlook, but his tempo choices frequently feel slow, sapping important moments of their energy. The opening scene, Donna Anna's arias, and the all-important second act finale all drag like a ball and chain. The result is a recording that has many drawbacks of a live recording -- the more distant focus and occasional sloppiness -- but rarely the energy or cohesion.
