After multiple decades in the vanguard of electronic music, George Evelyn's Nightmares on Wax has little left to prove, so his volume in the Coming Home mix-album series is appropriately a subdued affair. It has plenty of influences represented, and a few new tracks from associated producers, but as on any great NoW album, the vibe is smooth and the hour-plus runtime is never disturbed by surprises (which can be good or bad depending on the listener). Coming Home has plenty of examples of the NoW-type music: one of the prime examples of Donald Byrd's '70s fusion days, island tracks by Jimmy Cliff and Johnny Osbourne, soul from Marvin Gaye and Carla Thomas, and next-generation rap from Roots Manuva and Erykah Badu. The former Husker Du drummer and co-songwriter worked with the diverse cast of musicians from Godspeed You Black Emperor and Silver Mt. Zion on this new LP, Hot Wax, recorded in Montreal and Minneapolis. Grant on some of the some of the songs: the song "Narcissus, Narcissus" is my first attempt at combining ancient Greek mythology and American rock-a-billy. By merging those influences with an ice cream truck atmosphere I think I have found a style that defines this period of my career. This limited record is housed in ridiculously elaborate packaging -- an oversized pizza-delivery-sty le box with a wax volcano in one corner and inside, along with the record, are a bonus CD and some original photos and other artwork. As for the music, The Mountain Among Us contains surreal scrapes and drones that are a bit like early Organum, but slightly more varied and with a tinge of ethnic Celtic music thrown in. There are almost no vocals, and percussion only crops up in a couple of places; otherwise this consists only of mostly abstract soundscapes, the noises of birds and children playing, and then sudden, abrupt noises.
