Clearly, she's had a lot of chances already, and some have paid off big, notably her first two albums, Rickie Lee Jones and Pirates. Here, however, Jones has made a record of what sound like rough performances of musical ideas that might at some point become songs and then, with some work, acceptable recordings. As it is, the record is vague and unfocused, only aspiring to coherence when someone other than the singer/songwriter /producer is heard from, such as on the two songs co-written by Leo Kottke. The follow-up to 2009's Cause I Sez So was created at Blast Recording Studios in Newcastle, England with producer Jason Hill (LOUIS XIV/THE KILLERS) and features original NYD members, David Johansen (vocals) and Sylvain Sylvain (Guitar) together with Brian Delaney (Drums), Jason Hill (Bass) and Frank Infante (Guitar). While Abe Burrows' libretto was much praised, the show's main asset is Frank Loesser's songs, which are unfailingly tuneful and which accurately represent the vernacular of Runyon's characters, from Fugue for Tinhorns, a trio song full of horse racing slang, to Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat, a revival meeting pastiche in which a gambler claims to have found salvation. Luck Be a Lady, a gambler's ode to good fortune, became a standard. Winning as these are, love songs such as I'll Know and I've Never Been in Love Before are equally affecting.
