I like playing with music and its relationship to the theater, particularly in the supporting role, Duke Ellington remarked in an audio interview from the reissue of his splendid soundtrack to Otto Preminger's 1959 film, Anatomy of a Murder. Doing the score for a picture really calls for being along with the action and absorbing all of the atmosphere [of] everything taking place in the picture. Billed as a band that blends punk, post-hardcore, and goth sounds, Aiden is actually a bit more straightforward than that: their sound is a surprisingly well-developed blend of melodic punk and screamo. The goth influence is mainly visual: in the liner photos their heavily made-up eyes all glare out at you from under diagonal, dyed-black bangs. Ink, piercings, baleful stares -- they've got the whole look down pat. In fact, Aiden's visual image is so generic that it actually lowers expectations for their music, which takes you by surprise with both its lyrical subtlety (okay, its relative lyrical subtlety) and its pop-smart structure. ABC's modern medical soap Grey's Anatomy was music-savvy from its initial promotional push, pairing the Postal Service's Such Great Heights to snippets of the cast cracking wise and learning about life as they tumbled through first-year residencies. Music licensing was nothing new for the Postal Service by the fall 2004 premiere season; their graceful indie electronica had already been featured in Garden State, Laguna Beach, you name it. Paris Blues had the potential for being an important Hollywood movie. Originally, it was supposed to be about a pair of interracial romances involving American jazz musicians who were living in Paris. Instead, the producers chickened out at the last minute and made the plot a bit more conventional. However, the movie, starring Paul Newman (as a trombonist whose playing was ghosted by Murray McEachern), Sidney Poitier (on tenor, sounding an awful lot like Guy Lafitte), Joanne Woodward and Diahann Carroll, still has its moments and to an extent deals with the jazz life. Anatomy Of A Tear is already the third album of Dutch Downtempo/Prog/Ps ychedelic band (if you also count the mini album Youth fourth). There is another interesting shift in direction while their second album Mettle was mostly a Jazz album, this one is more into Psychedelic Prog ala ARCHIVE with some Gothic overtones. Maybe its also because of the extended guest list: we have David J and Graham Lewis again (of respectively Bauhaus/Wire fame), there is also Blaine L. Reininger of Tuxedomoon, and ex-Swans Jarboe with her beautiful dark chanting. And, of course the core trio: Marie-Claudine Vanvlemen, Niels Van Hoorn, Richard Van Kruysdijk.
