It may be hard to believe, but 2004's Greatest Hits is not only the first retrospective Neil Young has released since 1977's Decade, it's the first ever single-disc collection of his best-known songs. That's a span of 27 years separating the two collections, which is an awful long time to resist a Greatest Hits disc -- many of his peers succumbed, offering countless comps during those years -- and such a resistance to a compilation may not be much a surprise from the legendarily prickly Young, but what is a surprise is that 11 of the 16 songs on Greatest Hits were also on Decade. Graced with cover art of a grotesque gorilla sporting the Stones' trademark leering lips, GRRR! doesn't quite have the classy veneer usually associated with a 50th anniversary collection. Frankly, that's a good sign for the Rolling Stones: they're celebrating their half-century together but refusing to take themselves too seriously, even when they're assembling a mammoth retrospective that's available in two wildly different incarnations. Greatest Hits may ignore some of his better album tracks, but it does contain what the title says -- Dan Fogelberg's biggest hits, prior to its release date of 1982. Really, that means only one big hit -- The Language of Love -- is missing, since his peak of popularity arrived in the early '80s, when Longer, Same Old Lang Syne, Hard to Say, and Leader of the Band all made the Top Ten, and Heart Hotels, Run for the Roses, Missing You, and Make Love Stay cracked the Top 40. There are more complete compilations of the McGuire Sisters' music, but this 12-song, 32-minute compilation, which covers six years in their history from 1954 through 1960, is as simple and charming a body of work as you can find for the price. Perhaps it's the purity of their voices and the arrangements behind them that make this one of the few MCA CDs of the 1980s, apart from a couple of blues titles, with sound quality that still holds up at the dawn of the 21st century. It's also a good representation of the pop side of 1950s music, which isn't spoken of very often. While one would like to dismiss the McGuire Sisters as creators of pop product, they were actually extraordinary musicians, as proven here. This collection may indeed be made up of some of gospel music’s greatest tunes, but it isn’t necessarily the greatest set of performances of them by the Golden Gate Quartet. These 15 selections, which make for about 25 minutes of music on this disc, were taken from very late recordings by the group in the '80s, when the only original member was Clyde Riddick. These are reinterpretations of some of the group’s most memorable recordings of the '30s and '40s.
