Ken Burns tops himself with this epic of American history, told in "nine innings," with a skilled narration by John Chancellor and the voices of Paul Newman, Jason Robards, Billy Crystal, and other stars. The series spans 150 years, starting with the myth-debunking tale of baseball's true beginnings -- when it was a game "one degree above mayhem." Then follow the growth of America's National Pastime through the decades of glory and record-setting achievements, as well as the scandals, the bigotry, and the big money. The series portrays the game as a mirror of America itself -- the passions, prejudices, and ambitions that have shape the country.

Major League baseball began creating official World Series films in 1943 to support and entertain the U.S. troops serving overseas. These films, which have since grown into dynamic documentaries, include some of the most exciting baseball moments of all time. This volume covers the St. Louis Cardinals in the series of 1964, 1967 and 1968. The famous '64 World Series had the powerhouse Cardinals (behind pitching great Bob Gibson) taking on the fading remnants of a great Yankees team, in games marked by tense pitching duels and heroic clutch hitting. In '67, the Cards faced the Red Sox, with predictable results, and in '68 they took on the Detroit Tigers behind the still-dominant Gibson and slugger Orlando Cepeda.

This film, narrated by Bob Costas, celebrates the lives and achievements of the greatest baseball players of the 20th century, as voted by two million people around the world. Costas takes the viewer through each of the nine positions, with recollections and film clips of the top stars who played at each spot. Among the legends of today and yesteryear are Mark McGwire, Mike Schmidt, Willie Mays, Brooks Robinson, and more. This is an inspiring story of individual effort, personal heroics, and team spirit.
