Throw a Pirate Party for Kids

Pirate parties can be fun around Halloween or for birthdays. I hope this guide gives you some interesting ideas for spicing up your party!

The Invitations

Send out paper treasure maps as invitations to the party! You can make your own using aged paper, or get preprinted maps and stamp them shut with a skull and crossbones on the seal of the envelope.

If you'd like to do a treasure map-making activity with the kids at your party, these skull-emblazoned forms would be a good place to start.

Premade Child Pirate Costumes

If you're ready to go all out, you can buy your child a premade, fully done-up pirate costume. Most of these costumes come with some sort of ragged top, a skirt for girls or "torn" pants for boys, a hat, a red bandana, and stripes invoked somewhere in there. Buy a premade pirate costume if you don't mind spending a little extra cash to save yourself a little extra trouble, or if your child badly wants an "official" costume (a whining session I definitely remember from when my younger brother was a kid). They should last a few Halloween seasons, though, so it might be a good investment if your child enjoys dressing up a lot. The above costumes are priced pretty reasonably, especially compared to adult costumes.

Build Your Own Costume

If you'd like to put together your own costume, which will give you more flexibility and might be more comfortable than a premade costume (though probably less flashy) the above items are a good place to start. Layer a striped t shirt and black pants as a base, and then add a bandana, eye patch, and pirate hat.

If you'll be wearing shoes at the party, or going out trick-or-treating, pirate boot covers are a great addition! They transform any normal black shoe into a genuine pirate boot by adding a calf-cover and a folded-down cuff, and the strap comfortably on your legs above your shoes.

Lastly, depending on your family's views about weapon toys, a plastic buccaneer sword tucked into a leather belt can make any kid feel like a fearsome pirate.

Even Pirates Accessorize...

These could also work as fun items to hand out to your party guests, or to leave around the room for kids who want to up the pirate factor on their costumes!

These are great for stabbing through fruit, cheese cubes, or little pieces of cake. Little kids are sure to try to fight with them and probably snap them, though, so watch out for pieces left on your floor. And they are, of course, a choking hazard for babies. 7-12 year olds will love them, I can guarantee!
