Best quote-unquote Educational Websites for Fall
Sometimes you need to break up your stress but don't want to feel like you're actively smashing your hard-earned brain cells into pancakes as you do so. Sometimes, the clock's hands are edging toward 3 AM and your paper's not done yet and you just need a tiny little break... but you're morally unwilling to close your computer and get up. Inspiration could strike at any time, after all.
Wasting time while still feeling productive sounds impossible, I know, but just wait! The magic days are here! The internet knows we want procrastination without that guilty procrastination feeling, and the internet, as always, has provided. These mildly educational games will allow you to ignore work while still feeling productive. Read on to see the best ways to justify your lack of get'erdone.
Free Rice- feed people while building vocabulary
Caption
This simple and surprisingly addictive game will boost your vocabulary while allowing you to feel good about yourself at the same time. In Free Rice, you have to guess the correct definition to a word based on four multiple-choice answers. If you guess correctly, 10 grains of rice are donated to world hunger organizations. The rice grains show up in a cute little bowl on the right side of the page, so you can watch your progress grow! At every 10 right answers, or 100 grains, the bowl gets full and movew to the side, while a new bowl appears.
This site doesn't ask you for any personal information, and is extremely easy to use- you can start playing right away on the site. You move up the levels as you play, so while words might start out as something you might read in your every day newspaper, they progress to complicated, obscure vocabulary that even some college professors might not recognize. If you leave the site and then return, it picks up at the level where you left off, so you don't have to build up your progress multiple times. You can, however, change levels manually if you wish.
For a terrific way to help world hunger quickly and easily, definitely check out FreeRice.com!
Sporcle! Quizzes on Everything!
Caption
Sporcle swept through my freshman dorm like a foot fungus epidemic, although far more fun and intellectually stimulating. Sporcle.com boasts timed quizzes on almost every subject you can imagine, running from naming all the states in the US to remembering Brett Favre's touchdowns to listing the slogans for candy companies. Sporcle isn't for multiple-choice-relying wimps: Each game is in the formats of either "Name all the..." or else they list slogans/quotes/facts and you have to name the thing that goes with it. Sporlce will test your memory and your ability to keep cool under pressure, and it's sure to draw a crowd whenever you play.
Text Twist- Will twist your hours into minutes
Caption
I wouldn't call Text Twist as educational as the other games on here, but it will still get your mind thinking in different ways- this can be helpful for writing a paper, I swear! Text Twist is your typical anagram game, in which it gives you 7 letters and you have to make as many words as possible by typing the words on your keyboard. It tells you how many words are possible, and you gain points for each word guessed. However, and this has frustrated many a poor Text-Twisted soul, you can only advance if you correctly guess the full 7 letter word that's possible with those letters.
Beware, Text Twist will make your to-do list regret the day it came to be...
