How To Attract Butterflies and Hummingbirds to Your Garden
Having the plants and treats that butterflies and hummingbirds enjoy add to the outdoor pleasure of the gardener. During the spring, summer and fall months in the northeast my wife and I get to sit outside and enjoy the weather. We get our added treat when we see a Swallowtale or Monarch butterfly swoop into the yard and spend some time. An added surprise for us and becoming more regular as years go by is seeing hummingbirds dart in and out of site.
We continue to add plants and more to help attract these little gifts from God.
Both butterflies and hummingbirds love sweet nector of brightly coloured flowers.
One of the easiest plants to find and plant that suits that desire is the butterfly bush. As the name notes, butterflies are attracted to its all summer blooms. Hummingbirds are attracted to them too. This is a perenial plant meaning it will come back every year. They usually need some space to grow so follow directions planting them deap enough with plenty of loode soil around them and without encroaching plants.
For best results of many blooms the plant should be cut back in the late winter allowing for new growth to give more profuse blooms. These are a hardy plant and in out Long Island weather with hot summers and cold damp winters they do well.
Another perenial that attracts butterflies is the globe thistle. It also attracts pollen carrying bees that are beneficial to the garden and genberally do not bother the gardener is the Globe thistle.
The globe thistle is a taller plant that supports itself but can always use a little extra help. The blue colour is soothing to my eye.
Corepsis and Bee Balm also look good in the garden and attract winged friends.
Be sure to get a book that notes the many flowering plants that bllom every year and also attract Butterflies. Looking to get more hummingbirds to the yard is also a task that can be shared with the flowers some butterflies like. Read up and find the flower they both like.
Hummingbirds to like particular flowers that they drink from. These birds are also attracted to Hummingbird feeders that hold sweet water and are usuall a bright red that attracts the little hummingbirds.
The feeders come in varied sizes and shapes and usually in that red colour. Prepackaged sweets come with some feeders while others give very "sugary" recipise. Keeping the hummingbird clean and full is important. Also have it up very early in the spring in climates that are cooler. Hummingbirds appreciate a treat early on their migrating journeys. Sometimes on their journey they will stop and make a home nearby a Hummingbird feeder.
