The Coolest Laptop Computers For Less Than 500 Dollars

A look at the best cool and cheap laptops that cost less than half a grand.

When you buy a new laptop, you’ve got to think about price, features, and how cool the computer will look when  you’re using it around town.  Computers should be fun.  They should give you that feeling that you’ve really bought something exciting, and every time you turn on your new laptop, you should feel inspired.

Unfortunately, that feeling’s hard to come by when you’re on a tight budget.  Nevertheless, there are some absolutely fantastic PCs out there for $500 or less.  Here’s a look at a few of the best options.

With about a ten inch screen, the Lenovo S10-3T isn’t the biggest laptop on this list, and it’s certainly not the most powerful.  However, it’s got a touch screen that works extremely well, and if you’re trying to find a cool netbook, this is a great feature to look for.  A touch screen can make it more fun to browse the web or play games, as many Apple iPad fans know, and it’s nice that the screen can be folded around for a more interactive, engaging experience.

Bluetooth and an integrated camera are other cool features of this Lenovo, but you should note that it lags in the speed department.  Add some extra ram if you really want to make the S10-3T stand out.

The Toshiba Satellite series offers great style, performance, and a very low price tag, and this model combines all three for a very impressive computing experience.  A 15.6” display, comfortable keyboard, and a integrated webcam are the best features of this Toshiba--besides the price tag, of course.

Computer buyers who are looking for a fairly fast computer can’t do much better for under $500 than this Satellite.  It ships with Windows Home 7 Premium, it’s Wi-Fi ready, and it’s a great laptop with a brilliant, relatively large screen from a major company for cheap.  What more could you really want from a basic laptop computer?

At less than two inches high and well under three and a half pounds, Asus has made a real head-turner.  The Eee series has been very popular as Asus’s line of netbooks, but this computer feels much more like a traditional laptop with a 12 inch screen, Atom 1.6 Ghz processor and stunning design.

A 250GB hard drive is a major improvement over other flash-only entries in the Eee series.  It’s also got a webcam, readers for memory cards, and Windows Home 7 premium.  But look at it.  The best reason to buy this is its incredible portability and light weight.  It’s great for travelers or anyone who’s going to use their laptop frequently at coffeeshops and book stores.

Sony computers don’t tend to be inexpensive, but they’re certainly quality products.  With a 15.1” screen and a Pentium Dual-Core 2 GHz processor, this VAIO is powerful, fast, and suitable for just about any computing purpose.  It’s also under $400, so you’ll have enough money to upgrade the memory somewhat.  There are a few problems, noticeably the short 4 hour battery life and the weight of the laptop, which is over six pounds.  Still, it’s a VAIO at a very cheap price tag, allowing you to get a really high quality computer from a major manufacturer at an incredible value.
