1. Older Baby ClothesIf do not have a lot of money to spend baby clothes are always a great option, but as I mother I noticed people typically love to buy the newborn baby clothes (they are so cute and tiny), so I would suggest give 12 months, 18 months, or even 24 months. That way mothers will have more to choose from as the child grows.
2. Keep Sake ItemsThis can be very fun as you can get creative with this idea. Baby books for all the first, a frame to hang with their hand and foot prints, a box or chest to keep their favorite things in, or even an outfit to bring them home in from the hospital. This will mean so much to a new mother especially as the child grows.
3. Free ThingsMaybe you would like to let the mother to be choose, so I would suggest a little stuff animal holding a gift card to Target, Walmart, Babies R US, Etc. Also, you could include a card with advice or even information that you wish you had starting out as a new mom. Such as websites that you have found that will give free samples of formula, diapers etc. or let them know about incentives companies give to make yo want to buy their products. Or maybe buy a photo session for newborn pictures. Also a book on development for baby's first year.
4. A Medicine ToteLets face it, little ones get sick and parents often are not prepared for it. I would suggest giving  a tote with infant medicine, thermometer, pedialyte, teething gel or tablets, and other things that could comfort baby during sick times. This will also be a relieve for parents to know they are prepared for these unexpected times.
5. Your Must Have Items.Sometimes we can not afford gifts alone. So if you have an item in mind that is  must have, get friends or family members to go in on the gift with you! I think a baby swing, a Bumbo, a changing pad, crib soother and baby monitor are my must haves.
