Privacy Trees Instead of Fencing
Many times home owners do not want to be fenced in with a regular vinyl or wooden fence but they still want to mark their boundaries and have some form of privacy. An excellent way of doing this is to plant evergreen privacy trees. These not only act as privacy, but wind breaks and a sound barrier as well. The following are proven winners.
Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae - First Choice
This is the top selling tree for a privacy barrier. These evergreens grow columnar up to 3-5 ft. a year maturing at 40-60' tall. They are deer resistant and drought tolerant. These are not to be confused with the regular arborvitae that do not do as well in the weather. The zones are 5-9. Plant them 5-6' apart when using these as a privacy barrier.
Wichita Blue Juniper - The Blue Choice
These are the bluest upright Juniper available which give you a blue color all year and take a pyramidal form. These mature at 15' within 10 years. These are also deer resistant. Plant 4-6' apart for a privacy barrier. These are good for zones 3-9.
Nellie Stevens Evergreen Holly Takes Summer Heat
These make the ideal selection for a privacy barrier. They grow at a rate of 3 feet a year maturing at 15-25' and tolerates neglect. They stay deep green all year even during the summer heat. They grow naturally into a pyramidal shape and are good for zones 6-9. These do attract birds since they produce red berries in the winter. Plant them 5-6' apart for a privacy barrier.
Leyland Cypress Evergreen Tree
The Leyland Cypress evergreen can expect to grow 3-4 feet a year maturing at 20-30' in rows. The Leyland is also deer and drought resistant and have a feathery soft texture feel. These take shape to a pyramidal form and are good for zones 6-10. For use as a privacy barrier, spacing should be 6' apart.
Skyrocket Juniper Maintenance Free
These are completely maintenance free and reach maturity at 15' in 10-15 years. These are drought and deer resistant. These have a dusty blue green color that maintains its color year round. They are good for zones 4-8. Plant them 4-5' apart for a privacy barrier.
