Car Seats - When to Upgrade

Not every car seat is the same.  From infant cars seat to booster seats, from Britax to Graco, they're all different.  They have different requirements and need model specific installation.  You must read the directions inside and out.  Do not throw them away because, odds are, you're going to need to read the directions again one day.

Also, know the age and weight limits of the car seat.  Keep your child rear facing as long as possible.  If deciding between an infant car seat or a convertible, look to the infant car seat and later upgrading.  Infant car seats are a better fit for newborns, which means added security.

Children will inevitably outgrow their infant car seat then their convertible.  It does not mean they're done with car seats all together. When exactly your child is ready for the booster seat upgrade all depends on the size requirements of the convertible car seat.  Once children outgrow the height or weight, shop around for a booster seat.  They'll need to sit in a booster seat until the car seat belts fit properly, usually at about 4'9'', which depending on size, can be anytime between ages eight and 12.
