Toys for Young Doctor Who Fans

Doctor Who, a popular TV series shown on the BBC, features the Doctor (who is now played by actor Matt Smith), a Time Lord, as he travels through time and space in his TARDIS, battling evil and saving civilizations.  Fans of the series already have the DVDs and specials, the books, and some may even have a few toys laying around such as action figures or Sonic Screwdrivers.

But, what gifts would be great for the younger fans of the Doctor Who series? Which toys would appeal to kids?  In this guide, I'll show several toys that can be gifted to kids who are Doctor Who fans which are great for pretend play and for staging scenes of their favorite Doctor Who episodes.  Not only are they a lot of fun for the Doctor Who fans to play with, but they are also collector items.

The TARDIS is one of the most popular Doctor Who elements, and the TARDIS can be bought as USB Hubs, levitating novelties, keychains, jewelry, as as listed above, even banks and flight control toys.  The bank is great for young Doctor Who fans who get an allowance, and it features an opening door which shows the interior of the TARDIS.  The Flight Control TARDIS (4th, above) is battery operated, has many sound effects (including the humming and whirring of the dematerilization and materialization), will spin, shake, and move while the light on top glows.  It has working doors and the plastic is molded to resemble wood grain.  It's a great replica of the TARDIS, and a great toy to couple with action figures.

Above, I have also added an Adipose.  This is a stress toy, but can also be cuddled by small children as they would a stuffed toy since it is as big as a hand.  Adipose beings are made of fat and are squishy, so it would make a perfect play toy (even as a stress toy) because it is so squishy.

One of the more fun toys for kids is a helmet that has sound effects, and there are two in the Doctor Who line of toys.  Above, you can see a Judoon helmet which looks very similar to the ones covering the rhinosceros-like creatures on the TV series, and below, you can see a Cyberman mask.  They both fit children and each has sayings that will emit with the press of a button.  They also alter voice to sound very similar to the creatures on the TV show.  These are great toys for pretend play (and great for Halloween as well!).

Sonic Screwdrivers are also really cool and great for pretend play.  There are several styles to choose from (since the styles change from Doctor to Doctor), and they all glow in a bright greenish-yellow hue and some of them have sound effects much like the TV Doctor's sonic screwdriver (the 11th Doctor's as shown below, for example).  Grab one of these, a brown suit and a bow tie, and your little Doctor Who can have hours of imaginative play.

Daleks are also insanely popular Doctor Who toys because they are the Doctor's oldest nemesis.  The one I have included below is a favorite because it patrols around.  It can be placed on any flat surface, but preferably a tabletop or desk since there are ends to those objects.  It has sensors on the bottom that will tell it when there is no ground/surface beneath it, and when these sensors alert it, it will turn and go another way (and when it does so, it says in a very Dalek way "Exterminate!"), and it continues to do so, never falling off a surface.  It's very small (3 inches) but would go great with the 5 inch action figures.

The best toys for young Doctor Who fans are action figures.  Though they can be a bit pricey, in the hands of a child who takes care of their belongings, these toys can last for years and would still be collectible when they've outgrown them.  They come in several sizes from 5 inch to 12 inch (such as the Martha figure above), and there are figures of each of the 11 Doctors, several companions (such as Amy Pond, above) and there are also foes such as Daleks, Cybermen, Sonataran (as above) and more.

And, if you have a healthy collection of the 5 inch figures, an awesome toy to couple with them is the 11th Doctor TARDIS playset, as pictured above.  It is fairly large, but the controls are set to be sized for the 5 inch action figures.  It's great for pretending and acting out scenes from the various episodes, or to imagine the Doctor and Amy are traveling to different destinations.

While the DVDs and books are great, younger fans would probably most prefer a toy as a gift, and each of these Doctor Who toys would make great gifts.
