Marvel Minimates Series 7

Series 7 of Marvel Minimates once again focuses mostly on the Spider-Man universe with some very interesting selections put into this wave.

Ultimate Spider-Man and Chameleon

Another Spider-Man figure pops up in the Minimates world but this time it's Ultimate Spider-Man. For those not in the know, the Ultimate version is from a different universe where Peter Parker is still a 16-year old teenager masquerading as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Only a few things have changed from previous versions. This Spidey has bigger eyes, no webs on his costume and different spider logos on both the front and back of his costume. Otherwise, the colors still remain the same but this look feels different like he is a younger version.

Chameleon is one of Spidey's older foes but one that doesn't seem to garner as much attention as his flashier peers. This figure feels the same way as the only identifying feature on the Chameleon is his face, or lack of it. He wears a suit, which may sound odd but it ties into his chase figure. Overall, there isn't anythging special with this figure as this particular pack is pretty much a throwaway one.

Grey Hulk and Rhino

Grey Hulk is actually the first version of the Hulk to have appeared in the comic books before he changed green. The reason for the color change is due to a printing error that just stuck. He is very similar to the previous versions of the Hulk in body type and details. However, besides his skin color, he has a much meaner expression on his face and an additional headpiece to make his forehead look bigger, sort of like the Frankenstein monster. Even though he isn't as strong as his green version, he is definitely craftier and meaner.

The Rhino is a great character to include in this wave as he has fought both Spider-Man and Hulk. He was originally found in a five-pack set where he was the mysterious bonus fifth figure. Now poeple have the chance to get this figure with this two-pack. He is an incredible figure, simple in design but extremely effective. The main drawing point is his horn and it looks absolutely menacing. It makes Rhino look powerful and that's the way he should feel.

Spider-Man 2099 and Silver Surfer

Spider-Man 2099 is a future version of Spidey that has no relation to the original. There isn't much detaling on this figure besides the mask, emblem and arm treatment. I wish the blue on his costume was a bit darker or even serving as shadow treatment to give the characetr some depth since he has no accessories. It's not a bad variant of Spidey but lacks that punch to make him exciting.

Silver Surfer
is a former herald of Galactus and the first one to serve the Devourer of Worlds. The silver paint application on this figure is amazing. Even though there is little detiling on him, whatever is shown is done very well especially with on his face and the metallic sheen on his body. He does come with his surfboard but there is no way to make him stay on it without falling off.

Chameleon as J. Jonah Jameson

Interestingly enough, Chameleon comes back as a chase figure but how do you make him interesting? Easy, just give him a disguise. In this case he dresses up as J. Jonah Jameson, the editor of the Daily Bugle. I love the expression on Jameson's face showcasing his iconic look. I love how the different head is utilized as it fits over Chameleon's head; it really becomes a mask. Personally, this is the Chameleon set you shouold get because it is exactly the same except for Jameson's head. In a way it's a cheap way to pick up a character that wouldn't garner much attention but I do love the gimmick. He is paired with Ultimate Spider-Man.

Final Note

Marvel Minimates Series 7 is pretty good with the re-releases of a few figures such as Rhino, Ultimate Spider-Man and Silver Surfer. It's great to be able to pick up these characters that were hard to obtain in the first place through exclusive offers. But I do wish that the chase figures become much more valuable in terrms of being different. Changing hair color or having a new face doesn't always justify its cost. It was to be something truly worthwhile and so far it's been lacking.
