DC Super Friends Invades the World of Imaginext

I remember growing up as a kid how excited I was to play with my superheroes. As the years have gone by I have noticed are superhero toys have been catered towards more of the adult collector rather than children. This is why I am grateful to see that someone has taken notice to include kids back into the equation. Fisher-Price's Imaginext line has been very successful targeting toddlers ages 3 and up. Now they have brought DC Super Friends into the fold with much success. Trust me when I say that this is a very addicting collection for both kids and adults alike.

Keep in mind that it's very easy to get swayed by all the figures, vehicles and play sets that are availble. What people need to consider is what they actually need versus collecting the entire thing (though there is nothing wrong in being a collector as well).

Even Batman Needs a Home

Without a doubt, the Batcave will eventually become a part of your child's collection whether you want it or not. It's too hard to resist. Trust me, I've tried. When looking at the entire line, take this one into consideration because of the two characters included with this set—Batman and Robin. As you start looking at the other vehicle sets, you will notice how often these characters are repeated over and over again.

But if you are serious about getting into the DC Super Friends line, the Batcave is going to find its way into your household. It's a great play set and one that commands hours of fun even if the only two characters you have in possession are the Dynamic Duo.

This play set is found at Target, Wal-Mart and Toys 'R' Us, as well as online retailers such as Amazon and Kohl's. The running price is $44.95 so you really should be wary of those selling it for more. Since it's still available in stores, you should be able to get a good deal on it.

The set includes Batman, Robin, Batcycle, two bat-arangs, command center, launcher, satellite, antenna, and bat-hook.

Batman's Array of Awesome Vehicles

The bulk of this line is dedicated to Batman. This is usually the case in any toy series as the Dark Knight is perhaps the best known comic book character to be converted into toy form (I believe Spider-Man is right on his tail). Imaginext has provided Batman with many vehicles. Each vehicle set comes with a version of Batman. As you will notice when you start obtaining a lot of these sets, the Batman figure is often repeated and repackaged despite the variety of costumes.

A lot of these vehicle sets are affordable coming in under $12 each. Of course these are the mini versions meaning in some cases there are bigger sized vehicles. But there are some like the Batwing that is completely unique. The smaller sized Batmobile is actually quite impressive and very compact. The same can be said with the Batcopter.

The bigger version of the Batmobile will cost more and has a completely different design from the smaller one. But that isn't even half the story as more come into play, and making your decisions even tougher.

Meet Batman's Friends

This isn't called DC Super Friends without a reason even though the entire line is mostly Batman-centric in nature. Batman is joined by his buddies helping break up the monotony of Batman's universe. Most of these sets are in the $6-$7 range and comes with some interesting accessories.

Batman comes with various weaponry and vehicles such as the Batcycle, an Arctic snowmobile, and other gadgetry. But Batman's allies are also in on the act.

While Robin is usualy featured as part of one half of "Batman and...", he can be bought separately as part of the Robin and Cycle Set. I actually like this even though the cycles used in this series are all the same. It's because the colors are striking and this Robin is slightly different... he has long sleeves.

It's hard to market Superman considering he really doesn't need anything in his arsenal. Or does he? I really like how Imaginext put this package together as the Man of Steel comes with a claw-like device to help him handle Kryptonite (also included). To help him with this dangerous mission is his trusty dog Krypto.

A surprising inclusion is Green Lantern and Jet Set. It's not so much that Green Lantern is part of this series because he has been in previous ones. No, the surprising part is which Green Lantern was chosen for the task. For comic book fans, having Hal Jordan back into the fold is a boon and one that will definitely cause a decrease in this set on the shelves just because this is a short-packed set. It regularly prices around $12 but be prepared to pay an arm and a leg on online stores if you can't find him through regular means. Interestingly enough, a recent release of Robin and this jet (colored red of course) is now availble. This is where it comes down to want you really need and what you want.

Bring on the Bad Guys

Half of the fun is seeing what villains Batman has to face. I have to say that they are the more exciting bunch in this line. The Joker, Mr. Freeze, the Riddler, Two-Face and the Penguin definitely have some great accessories to deal with Batman and his friends.

The Riddler and Car is a good alternative if you need another vehicle though I like the question mark launcher much better.

Even better is having the Joker's Fun House as part of this deadly mix. In fact it's so zany that this is a must buy. Plus, it costs half the price of the Batcave.

Target Exclusives

Keep in mind that some select retailers have exclusive sets avaialble only at its stores. In the case of Target, they were selling the individual characters with fewer accessories for only $2-$3 each. This was how he first got into the Imaginext world because of this low introductory prices. In most cases these figures have some of the accessories as the bigger sets, but not the Joker. The Mini Figure Joker comes with different gadgetry that is exclusive only to this set. It's actually one of the best as well so I would snatch this one up.

There have been some holiday bundles as well that combine a few sets together and sold as one. Honestly, these have been marked at great prices so it's best to look out for these deals whenever a holiday season comes near.

Toys 'R' Us Exclusives

If obtaining the exclusive sets are your thing, then Toys 'R' Us is the place to shop. By far, Toys 'R' Us has the most exclusive DC Super Friends sets available. The Batman and Batcopter Set is a deluxe set featuring a bigger copter as well as a mini sub. There is a Batman ATV set that includes a huge hummer and a portable cage. Both of these sets include Batman and Robin.

The villains seem to have more accessories. Mr. Freeze and Cave Set is a small hideout for the walking iceberg. The Joker and Penguin are featured in two big vehicle sets with the Joker Van and Penguin Submarine. Recently released is a Two-Face Van complete with Two-Face and Riddler as well as the Riddler Bi-Plane Set with the Riddler and Batman. If you already have Two-Face and Riddler, then you don't need the van set as it is exactly the same as the Joker one. In fact all of these exclusives are repainted vehicles from previous Imaginext sets from other lines.

But these bigger vehicles do have a lot of playability. They add more arsenal to the collection especially for the villains. I just wish that the figures would at least be different in some aspect instead of having a plethora of the same characters over and over again.

The Future is Here!

It doesn't seem that this series will disappear anytime soon but how long will it last? I actually thought that this was it for the Imaginext DC Super Friends toy line until I saw the release of the Two-Face Van Set, the Riddler Bi-Plane Set and the Robin Jet Set. While new vehicles are a nice addition, different characters would be even nicer. This is going to happen in 2011 with the release of three new characters: Hawkman, Flash and Killer Croc. This is a great way to sustain this line and live up to its DC Super Friends name. After all, everything can't always be about Batman.
