Popular Women's Fragrances - Oriental Notes

The Fragrance Wheel is a popular way to classify fragrances.  The wheel divides fragrances into four major categories: Oriental, Floral, Fresh and Woody notes.  Generally, fragrances will share qualities, so the notes often blend between categories.  This guide will examine Women's Oriental Fragrances, which can be sub-divided into four additional categories.  They are woody oriental, oriental, soft oriental and floral oriental.

There are plenty of oriental fragrances on the market.  Oriental fragrances often last longer than the other note categories.  They are marked by intense ingredients that exude warmth and sensuality.  This guide will examine a variety of perfumes within each of the Oriental sub-categories.

Sexy 212 by Carolina Herrera

Sexy 212 by Carolina Herrera is a sensual woody oriental fragrance.  212 Sexy is described as a "seductive blend of captivating tangerine, bergamot, and rose pepper sprinkled with floral petals, gardenia, and hints of cotton candy warmed with musk." The notes include: Tangerine, Bergamot, Rose Pepper, Floral Petals, Gardenia, Cotton Candy, Sandalwood, 212 Musk, Vanilla.  I like this perfume a lot.  It is a bit expensive, but worth the money.  I bought my wife the large bottle, which ran around sixty dollars as well as a travel roller, which was fourteen dollars.  It is an exceptional fragrance.

Opium by Yves St. Laurent

Opium by Yves St. Laurent is a classic oriental fragrance introduced in 1977.  This oriental has incredible staying power and will still set you back fifty dollars a quarter century after it was introduced.  The top notes begin with mandarin orange, plum, clove, coriander, pepper and bay leaf.  The heart notes include  jasmine, rose, Lily of the Valley, carnation, cinnamon, peach and orris root.  The base notes combine sandalwood, cedarwood, myrrh, opopanax, labdanum, benzoin, castoreum, amber, incense, musk, patchouli, tolu and vetiver.

Pure Passion by Dior

Pure Poison was introduced by Dior in 2004.  It is a floral oriental fragrance.  The notes are a combination of Sweet Orange, Bergamot of Calabre, Mandarin of Sicily, Orange Flower, Jasmine Sambac LMR, Hydroponic Living Gardenia, Sandalwood, White Amber and Musks.  It begins as a floral before settling into a woody base with a sensual musky quality.

Princess by Vera Wang

Princess was introduced by Vera Wang in 2006.  It is a soft oriental.  The notes are a combination of Water Lily, Lady Apple, Mandarin Meringue, Apricot Skin, Ripe Pink Guava, Tahitian Flower, Wild Tuberose, Dark Chocolate, Pink Frosting Accord, Precious Amber, Musk, Chiffon Vanilla.  While the packaging appears intended for children, the price is an indication that it is a woman's fragrance.  It is.  While playful, this fragrance has sophistication.

Mania by Giorgio Armani

Armani Mani is a woody oriental introduced by Giorgio Armani in 2004.  The head notes open with Moroccan Bay leaf, Green mandarin Orange, Blackcurrant and Pink pepper.  The heart notes combine Muguet, Peony, Magnolia and Iris.  The fragrance finishes with a stable basse of Cedar, Amber, Vanilla, Musk and White Sandalwood.  It is a contemporary fragrance that is fit for special occasions.

Addict by Dior

Addict by Dior is an oriental fragrance.  The notes include Silk Tree Flower, Mandarin Leaf, Orange Blossom, Night Queen Flower, Bulgarian Rose, Bourbon Vanilla Absolute, Mysore Sandalwood, Tonka Bean.  It is an oriental with a vanilla influence.  It is very soft and unobtrusive.

Delices by Cartier

Delices by Cartier is a floral oriental released in 2006.  It is a fruity floral fragrance that combines Iced Cherry, Bergamot, Pink Pepper, Violet, Jasmine, Freesia, Amber, Tonka Bean, Musk, Sandalwood.  It is another modern youthful fragrance.

Blu II by Bulgari

Blu II by Bulgari is a recently released soft oriental introduced in 2009.  It is an elegant, contemporary fragrance whose vibrance is derived from a combination of Violet, Star Anise, Frosted Mandarin, Iris Absolute, Jasmine petals, Lily of the Valley, Precious Woods, Benzoin, Spanish Cistus Flowers and Musk.

Hot Couture by Givenchy

Hot Couture by Givenchy is a woody oriental introduced in 2000.  It is a warm, sweet, sensual fragrance.  The head notes are a fruity blend of bergamot, orange and raspberry.  The middle notes are magnolia, vetiver and black pepper.  The fragrance is anchored by a combination of sandalwood, amber and musk.

Obsession by Calvin Klein

Obsession by Calvin Klein is another classic fragrance, which has been around since 1985.  The fragrance can be described as an oriental.  This timeless fragrance introduces fruity and floral head notes of Mandarin, Bergamot, Jasmine, Rose and Orange Blossoms.  The heart notes combine Coriander, Tagete and Armoise.  The base notes include Amber and Oakmoss.  It may be an oldie, but it is still a goodie.

This guide has been an introduction to some of the popular fragrances that fall into the category of orientals.  I have tried to provide a mixture of contemporary and classic, while covering the four sub-categories.  While this list demonstrates ten popular fragrances, there are hundreds to choose from within this category.  If you have a favorite oriental fragrance to share, please feel free to leave a comment in my comment section.
