A Guide to Job-Related Trolls

Trolls don't just lie around idle all day...

When I was about eight years old, a toy that my mother loved in her childhood made a big comeback.  I first encountered a troll, those cheerful little plastic dolls with the vibrant hair, on the top of a pencil in a hospital gift shop.  That particular troll had no clothes, and as the fad grew and they gradually flooded Hallmarks across America, naked trolls continued to be easy to come by, but increasingly common were trolls in various costumes.  Before long, there was a troll to correspond with almost any occupation you could think of, making them ideal gifts for aunts, uncles and other well-settled adults, along with the kids who bought the dolls so eagerly.  Below are a few job-centered trolls: sailor, conductor, surgeon and baker.

This sailor looks all set for adventure in his bright blue suit.  I’ve always had a soft spot for sea captains; this guy makes me think of the Disney musical Pete’s Dragon, and I can imagine him gazing out through the rain at a shining beacon on the shoreline.  He also makes me think of the kindly Captain Jim, who becomes a dear neighbor to Anne and Gilbert when they marry and move away from Avonlea in the L. M. Montgomery series.  The blue hue of the uniform is very eye-catching, and it could double as a cop’s uniform easily enough.  The purple hair is the perfect finishing touch on this nautical fellow.

Children and trains tend to go together very well.  When I was little, my family went a couple of times to a railroad festival nearby, and we embarked upon an afternoon ride on the train and returned with conductor hats.  This troll has not only the hat but the overalls and bandana as well, plus some bright yellow hair.  He looks rather like I did when I served as narrator for the train ride during the local zoo’s annual Halloween event.  He would make a fun gift to go along with a train set, especially if the train is large enough for him to ride in.

The surgeon looks all set to handle a complicated operation in his scrubs. You can’t see much of his face, just the bright pink hair.  Which I suppose could signal that he is actually a she; it’s rather hard to tell with trolls, since the costume is the only indication of gender, and usually the costume is gender-neutral.  At any rate, this is a cute gift for a doctor or someone going into or recovering from surgery.

There are few things in this world that I enjoy more than pizza.  I’m a gal of simple tastes.  So I’m a big fan of this pizza guy, with his tall baker’s hat, flaming red hair and pristine white clothing that bears the message, “I *heart* pizza”.  This would make a great present for the chef in the family or someone who simply enjoys partaking of the culinary efforts of others, and any kitchen would feel just a little bit friendlier with him peeking out from one of the corners.
