Woman's Shaving Guide
It took many years and many trials and errors to learn how to make shaving a "pleasant" experience. Here are some tips and products to look for and avoid ...
Gilette Satin Care Shave Gel - found in the women's personal care section in a bright blue container. This is a creamy shaving gel that can work effectively. It's rich in product and lathers really easily, almost too easily. I found the manly smell to be offputting and it is a rare time that I purchase this product, though it performs okay. It just seems a little too slick, and doesn't appeal to my senses.
Skintimate Shaving Gel - This product is tops in my book! It is packaged in colored tubes and the colors and scents and styles vary slightly, appealing to a wide audience. There are many fruity choices (raspberry, etc) as well as formulas specifically for sensitive and dry skin. My personal favorite is the Baby Soft formula, which has a nice, soft baby powder scent to it. The formula foams well and my razor glides across each time.
Jason 6 in 1 - A more natural and unisex choice. This is the preferred choice by my husband and I like that it is unisex enough that we can both use it as needed. Though it lacks foam and a feminine scent, this product really does perform well and is easy to use.
Gilette Venus Razor - Gilette hit on a good thing with their razors. The Venus comes in a variety of styles and colors now, with a wide range of options to fit a woman's needs. The Venus is a fine choice in a shaver and was my preferred brand for a long time. Extra blades are readily sold and easy to change out when needed.
Shick's Quattro - this is probably my favorite razor to use. It works equally well on legs and underarms and the 4 blades seem to really attack the hair (but without harm) and remove it quickly. The Quattro comes at times with a slightly more expensive price, and the refill blades are an additional investment as well, but it performs so well that it's been the main one I purchase now.
Veet Hair Remover - this is a great resource if you want to safely and quickly remove longer hair. I purchased this only hoping it would work, and it did! The "bladeless razor" I found essentially useless and not needed - I found quickly that a simple washcloth removed the hair quicker and more effectively. Veet is designed to be applied on (but don't rub in) and then rinsed off a few minutes later. I found rubbing a test spot with a wet washcloth often did the trick, and then I'd use the same washcloth to rub the hair in soft circular motions ... and the hair was gone!
Exfoliating - priming my skin by using an exfoliating scrub on the areas I am going to shave made the world of difference for me. There are many on the market, and when money is no object one of my very favorites is Clinique's Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliator. It has a nice, light scent and the scrub is not too dry or harsh.
