Time to Sweat! Let's do Bikram Yoga!

Want to look taller, leaner, toner, have clearer skin, while improving your overall health? For most of us, that would be a dream come true!  Well, guess what?  Practicing Bikram yoga is the fastest way I know that can get you there.  I am not any long time Bikram yoga practitioner, but I can tell you that after practicing Bikram yoga for the past months, I noticed significant changes in my body.  My muffin top is slowly going away, my bye bye arms aka the jell-o arms are getting less ‘wiggly,’ and my legs are looking longer and leaner.  Yes, I do realize I sounded like some infomercial lady on TV but it’s true!

To give you an idea of how a typical Bikram yoga class is like, just imagine yourself sweating like a pig in a room full of people and feeling good about it.  Classes are held in a heated room at roughly 105 degree Fahrenheit for 90 minutes long.  But before you start thinking “this is a crazy idea”, promise you will give it a try, at least once.  I know 90 minutes might sound like a lifetime, but the class goes rather quickly, and it will be over before you can start complaining and wanting to go home.

Did I also mention that Bikram yoga helps you de-stress, clears your mind, raises your energy level, increases your flexibility, helps you sleep better, and helps you cleanse your body by eliminating toxins? Knowing all these benefits of practicing Bikram yoga, don’t you think you owe it to your body to give it a try?  Are you interested, or maybe curious?  Let’s get you set up so that you can have the proper clothing and things you need to start practicing Bikram yoga!

Get proper yoga attire

Proper yoga attire.  Please don’t be the person that shows up for class wearing only their under garments okay? That is not cool.  For the ladies, I would recommend wearing tank tops and stretchy long yoga pants or go with a sports bar and a pair of shorts if you feel more comfortable.  Remember you will be moving your body a lot, so wearing comfortable clothing is king.  You will also be doing yoga poses in front of the mirror for the entire 90 minutes, so it’s a good idea to look at yourself in nice or decent clothes than in rag okay? For guys, you can get away with wearing only shorts.  Of course if your body is so hairy that people mistaken you for a werewolf, then please put on a t-shirt, thank you.

This is the BEST yoga mat ever!

Nike yoga mat. Why I am so specific to say Nike yoga mat you ask? Because this Nike yoga mat is by far the best yoga mat that I’ve own, it’s not only super durable but also longer than your average mat.  So what does this translate to? More space! This is a great thing, especially if you are in a crowded room with lots of people.

Beach towels are money savers

Beach towels.  You will definitely need a towel on top of your mat.  Why? Because I guarantee that you will be dripping with sweat, and it won’t be pretty if you sweat some much that you slip off your mat.   This is also a little tip to save you money, because yoga mat towel will set you back on average $50 or more, while a beach towel cost at most $8.

This is a 'must' have

Hand towels. Hand towels are life savers.  Trust me when I say you will be sweating a bucket.  A majority of your sweat will be streaming down from your head and face; in fact, you will be sweating so much that if you don’t wipe down, your vision will be blurred and soon you won’t be able to see.  Okay, maybe not that extreme, but you will be glad to have a hand towel when you need it.

Water is our best friend!

Water. You absolutely need to bring a large bottle of water. You will be sweating so much that you ought to have water nearby to hydrate your body.  It’s a good idea to drink plenty of water before and after your practice.   One tip is to not drink big gulps of water in-between yoga poses.  There are so many poses that requires you to bend and twist that you will not feel comfortable if you drink too much water at a time.

Now that you know all the preparation you need to practice Bikram yoga, I think it’s time for you to sign up for a class.  So get out there and give Bikram yoga a try! Remember to drink plenty of water before and after class and not to eat anything at least 2 hours prior to your practice.  I will see you in class.  Good luck and have fun!  Namaste.
