iPhone 4 - The King of the Smartphone Ring?

If you're not using AT&T or Verizon...it's easy to feel left out.

What can be said about the iPhone that hasn’t been said before?  It’s your life, in your pocket, at all times.  There are few arguments you can make against the iPhone 4 being the greatest smart phone ever made.  It’s beautifully designed, it has millions of applications that you can download directly to the phone with a few taps of your finger, and it talks with your computer, iPad, laptop, outlook, and GMail with nary a hitch.  The iPhone 4 also functions as  a shell of sorts.  Meaning if you lose the phone,  you’re never in danger of losing  your valuable information as long as you’re syncing regularly.  All you have to do is  replace the phone, hook it up to your computer, and after a backup recovery process you’ll be right back where you  left off.

What about the unlucky few who don’t have access to the iPhone on their carrier?  What are you sullen few to do?  Well, while you may not be able to take part in the pop-culture movement that is iPhone, a lot of other phone makers are creating bold, new designs to try and shift the focus off of Steve Jobs and Cupertino.

The Motorola Atrix 4G is one of those phones.  An Android OS based phone, the Atrix 4G sports a 5 megapixel camera, a HDMI port, and a high resolution touch display.  You’ll also get lightening fast 4G data speeds which blows the lid of 3G at the expense of battery life.  But if you’re a daily charger, that’s not a bad trade off.  The Atrix 4 also sports a dual core processor giving decidedly fluid response levels from your browser, applications, videos, and any other mutlimedia tasks that like to munch up silicon.

The Samsung Galaxy S II is also a heavyweight contender, sporting specs that make even the iPhone 4 blush a bit.  A super AMOLED screen belts out razor sharp visuals and with a display that’s over 4 inches, movies and games really pop off this handset.  You’ll also get an 8 megapixel camera, a 2 megapixel front facing camera, 4G data speeds, and a killer dual core processor.

The bottom line is that it isn’t hard to fill a handset with higher-end specs than the iPhone 4, but the full package that is the iPhone still hasn’t quite come close to being beaten.  The two phones I mentioned are great handsets, and in a lot of ways they’re more feature-rich than the iPhone.  There is a design philosophy at work at Apple that explains this.  4G is fast, and a huge display and dual-core processor is even better, but think about the way you use your phone on a daily basis.  Does it make sense to have all of these cutting edge features if your battery dies after 4-5 hours of use?  Is a 5 inch screen worth it if the phone barely fits into your pocket?  In all honesty, I’m not interested in just blowing the iPhone out of the water on paper.  A serious contender to the smartphone crown has to be able to fit into your lifestyle, extra bells and whistles be damned.  And to that effect, the iPhone 4 is still king of the ring.
