The Best Blu-ray Player for Your Money!

This is the easiest recommendation I’ll ever make.  The best Blu-ray player on the market hands down is the PS3.  Let me justify that statement.  The Blu-ray platform is a young one, and in order to support all of the features that are consistently rolling out, you need to be able to update your drive’s firmware regularly.  The PS3 is obviously a huge investment for Sony, so regular
updates are plentiful, and with built in WiFi, it’s super easy to go online and update your firmware in a few easy steps.  Some third party Blu-ray players don’t get as many frequent updates, and occasionally you’ll run into errors that prohibit a shiny new Blu-ray disc from properly playing.  Try explaining that to your date when Season 1 of Magnum P.I. won’t boot up Friday night.

The PS3 is also just a great multimedia component to your home theater system.  Obviously you get the bonus of being able to play awesome games, but on top of that you can stream Netflix in HD, purchase and stream new release movies through Sony’s video on demand service, watch hit TV shows through Hulu, and stream files from your PC or laptop directly to your TV over Wifi.  It’s pretty close to being an all-in-one-machine, and if you’re going to spend money on a Blu-ray player, why not spend a little more to get something that blows your cable box out of the water.  We’re moving towards a Comcast-less future, and I couldn’t be more happy to see the advent of that age.

I should also note that the Xbox 360 accomplishes many of the same features I gushed about in the last paragraph, but this guide is about the best Blu-ray player for your money, not the best game system or media server.  The high definition wars are far from over.  With streaming services getting better and better by the day, it’s getting harder for people to justify spending 30 dollars on a disc when they can get a fairly comparable experience from Netflix or iTunes.  So while Sony may still be busy fighting the good fight on that front, a couple of hard facts remain.  Blu-ray has the highest audio visual quality available at home, and the PS3 is still the king of Blu-ray players in my book.
