Bohuslav Martinu considered his ambitious 1937 opera, Juliette (The Key to Dreams), his most important work. The composer discovered the surreal and poetic play by Georges Neveux during an extended stay in Paris and began working on the opera to his own libretto in French, although he switched to a Czech version for its premiere in Prague. The opera was a success in its initial and subsequent productions, but has never gained a foothold in the international repertoire. It's a shame, because it's full of rhapsodic, evocative music. While it's true that Martinu turned out concerti grossi in the 1930s, he also turned out several collections of madrigals at different points in his career, two of which appear here on the wonderful disc by the Netherlands Chamber Choir under the direction of Stephen Layton. Bohuslav Martinu's last opera, The Greek Passion, didn't see the stage until 1961, when it was produced in Zurich two years after the composer's death. The composer had based the libretto, written originally in English, on Nikos Kazantzakis' novel Christ Recrucified, with the intent that the opera would be staged by Covent Garden. It was rejected, though, and Martinu drastically revised the work to a Czech libretto, and it's that version that's recorded here. (There's a recording of the London version on Koch Schwann for listeners interested in its more adventurous original incarnation.) Bohuslav Martinu began his musical studies in Prague, but he only really came of age in Paris in the 1920s, where he was for a time a student of Albert Roussel. They must have been interesting lessons, for Martinu spoke not a word of French, and Roussel spoke nothing else. One of the strongest influences on Martinu was jazz, something else far from Roussel's aesthetic, and his little chamber ballet La Revue de Cuisine (Kitchen Review) made a strong impression on contemporary audiences--as indeed it does today. It's one of the best classical-jazz fusion pieces, including a smoky-toned tango and a riot of a Charleston. Giving a recording the title H. 136 may seem odd, but the fact that the featured work is a previously unrecorded string trio by Bohuslav Martinu from 1924 bearing the catalog number H. 136 explains everything.
