The prototypical journeyman, Billy Swan had a fleeting moment in the spotlight: I Can Help, a good-natured throwaway Swan put together in a half-hour, became an out-of-the-blue country/pop crossover hit in 1974. While the jaunty rockabilly gem opens this 16-song survey of Swan's Columbia work, a low-key charm spans the album. Other standouts here include Lover Please (Swan composed the rock & roll staple in 1962 while still in high school; Clyde McPhatter took it to the charts) and Don't Be Cruel (slowed down and given an earnest reading). In 1976, he signed with Elektra Records and his first hit was a remake of Hangin' On, which featured Emmylou Harris on harmony vocals and peaked at #16. His next single, Yesterday's Gone, which also featured Harris, became his first Top 10 hit in 1977. Several more hits followed between 1977 and 1979 with the biggest of these hits being a remake of Till the End and a cover of The Association's Never My Love which also featured harmony vocals from Janie Frickie. Singer/guitarists Robin & Linda Williams may be billed as a duo, but they perform in concert as a quartet. Backing the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, couple are Jim Watson, a founding member of the Red Clay Ramblers, and Kevin Maul. On their recent studio recordings, the Williamses have made a deliberate shift from folk music to a mix of country and folk, and their new repertoire would never work live if it didn't have Watson's electric bass as an anchoring rhythm and Maul's hot Dobro licks as dressing. This collection of tracks by veterans of the Austin club scene could make a lot of Yankees want to hop a plane to the Texas capitol. All tracks were recorded especially for this album, and far from being a throwaway like many such projects, this is a solid album-of-the-year candidate. The (relatively) known quantities present are Dale Watson, Don Walser, Ted Roddy, and The Wagoneers (reformed just for the occasion), and they each turn in a solid track. But even better are some whose music has never crossed Texas borders. Roy Heinrich's A Face In The Crowd and Cornell Hurd Band's I Cry, Then I Drink, Then I Cry are honky-tonk classics. I was raised in the old Primitive Baptist churches, and a lot of my people were old Baptist preachers, the good Dr. Ralph told Amazon.com, and I inherited that sound. It's a sound that unless you do inherit it, I think it's hard to get. Fittingly, it was Ralph Stanley who introduced a cappella quartet gospel harmonies to the bluegrass repertoire, and no other artist can come close to matching Stanley's emotional intensity. This hair-raising CD collects a dozen a cappella gems recorded between 1971 (with Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs) and 1992; you'll be hard-pressed to find sacred music that's more genuine or a voice that's more chilling. --Marc Greilsamer
