Pros A riveting read, clues for Harry (and the readers).
Cons Many are appalled by the romance subplot
Recommended it? Yes

I have been a big fan of Harry Potter since the fall of 1999. I was in college, and I found myself in Harvard Square with a group of friends. I bought the first book in the series because it was in paperback. To make a long story short, I read Sorcerer's Stone before the weekend was over and I went... Read full review »

Pros More of the wizarding world revealed, adventure with Dumbledore, interesting and funny...
Cons Harry withholds too much from his friends...and they all pay dearly.
Recommended it? Yes

As I've done with all of the other Harry Potter movies, I thought it would behoove me to reacquaint myself with the novel that movie is based on before the flick came out.  So I got to revisit Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince over the last week or so.  It was better than I remembered.  I only... Pros Fills in a lot of gaps, sets up the final book nicely.
Cons Really is no major plot - very disjointed.
Recommended it? No

I noticed that I have been writing glowing reviews on everything, so I decided it was time to write a critical review for a change. Much to my surprise, my first critical review is on a Harry Potter book. I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter series, I have watched the three main characters grow as I... Read full review »

Professional Reviews

New York Times Book Review: "To read Rowling's novels as an adult is to sink into a half-remembered state of childhood rapture, the trance produced when you gobbled up fantasies for the first time. In the series's fourth volume, ''HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE,'' Dumbledore lets Harry stumble across the Pensieve, a collecting dish for excess memories. To extract a memory, a wizard holds a wand to his temple, draws a silvery strand of thought from his head and taps it into the basin. Any wizard who touches the swirling contents of the bowl drops into the visions it contains, reliving them as if he had been present at their inception. Dipping into the fiction that is Rowling's Pensieve, adult readers tumble into an eerie but familiar realm, containing not only Rowling's images of Harry but their own memories of books they loved when they were Harry's age and younger."

First Line

It was nearing midnight and the Prime Minister was sitting alone in his office, reading a long memo that was slipping through his brain without leaving the slightest trace of meaning behind. He was waiting for a call from the President of a far distant country, and between wondering when the wretched man would telephone, and trying to suppress unpleasant memories of what had been a very long, tiring, and difficult week, there was not much space in his head for anything else.
