The Sun Also Rises at 80: Of Hemingway and his flawed elegance.
Over 100 years since his birth and 50 years since he was the most visible writer in America, Ernest Hemingway remains a man of many masks. A larger than life figure, Papa (his nickname), meant many different things to different people. There's Albert Murray's Hemingway - a high poet of the populace... Read full review »
The sun rises very late in Hemingway's alcohol-soaked novel
A few weeks ago, I was in Pamplona in the Basque region of northern Spain. I walked the path of the bulls (it was narrower than I expected). The last street the path crosses, at the entrance to the bull ring's holding pens is named for Ernest Hemingway. I had my picture taken with a statue of... Read full review »
The Sun Also Rises, but I'm Staying in Bed
The United States of America has been around for less than 250 years. It's amazing how this country has produced so many great writers in that short span of time: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mark Twain, James Fenimore Cooper, Stephen Crane, Herman Melville, Harper Lee, and Kurt Vonnegut just to name some... The Sun Also Rises... and a true artist along with it
Seldom does a novel emerge that is both powerful in its deliverance of the moral convictions being heretofore stressed by the author and at the same time written with such passion, with such finesse and delicacy that you could actually "taste" the fine details of the lifestyles of the characters... Shotgun Shells Leave a Bad Aftertaste
Time passes and the seasons change and you look so beautiful right now on your clay earth, and you are waiting for your time to come. Soon, friend, soon it will come and you will be up here with me, with me and the great Dimaggio, who has not been able to stop chasing Marilyn since he arrived here... Read full review »
...and the day was dim...
I just finished reading "The Sun Also Rises" by Ernest Hemingway and can't imagine why he's so popular. The story was aimless meandering - pointless and plotless, and the characters were pitiful. I wouldn't normally have chosen to read it, but it was the selection of the month for my book... Read full review »
A 20th century masterpiece!
Hemingway is a really intriguing author, which is evident even in his early work "The Sun Also Rises."
What I especially like about Hemingway is his writing style. It is so simple, and he uses so many short sentences, yet at the same time, each word seems to be important. It makes reading...

The Lost Generation never dies.
As a 20th century American novel fan, I have not found a book that represents the Lost Generation in a truer, better light than "The Sun Also Rises". Perhaps it is autobiographical in the sense that all characters are real. Perhaps it is Hemingway's style. I do not know.
This book focuses...

NOT good.
I recently read "The Sun Also Rises" and I gotta tell ya, I thought it sucked big time!It was confusing, and hard for me to identify with. It revolves around this guy, Jake, who is missing his package. Jake is in love with Lady Brett Ashley, who sleeps around a lot. Brett loves Jake, but they can't... Read full review »
Falling in love... with love
This phenomenal book stole my heart. The main character, Jake caught me and rendered me helpless like only REAL men in REAL life could during his first taxi ride when he talks to Brett. Hemingway's writing style in general far surpasses anything I've ever even laid eyes on before. I've never seen... Read full review »
