Pros lots of great trivia, well organized and well written
Cons not really a guide to all aspects of 19th c. life
Recommended it? Yes

I haven't read as many of the classics as I should, I suppose. But I picked up Daniel Pool's What Jane Austen Ate and Charles... Read full review »

Times Literary Supplement: "American readers, for whom the book was originally (in 1994) designed, will benefit more than British. But Pool adds invaluably to the 'solidity of specification' (as Henry James called it), that assumed but undescribed socio-historical backdrop, which every year recedes further from us as Victorian fiction becomes more remotely Victorian."
